🌈 Flag Friday: The Genderfluid Pride Flag

Welcome to Flag Friday! Each week we’re highlighting a different pride flag, its history, and the community it represents.

🏳️‍🌈 The Genderfluid Pride Flag

The Genderfluid Pride Flag represents people whose gender identity can change over time. A genderfluid person may experience different genders at different times, or their experience of gender may shift in other ways.

🏳️‍🌈 Who created it?

The Genderfluid Pride Flag was created in 2012 by JJ Poole. It was designed to represent the diversity and changing nature of genderfluid identities.

🏳️‍🌈 What do the colours mean?

🩷 Pink = Femininity
🤍 White = All genders
💜 Purple = A combination of masculinity and femininity
🖤 Black = A lack of gender
💙 Blue = Masculinity

🏳️‍🌈 A little history

The flag’s five stripes represent the different ways genderfluid people may experience their gender. Since its creation, it has become a widely recognized symbol of genderfluid visibility and pride.

The Genderfluid Pride Flag celebrates the freedom to experience and express gender in ways that may change over time. It challenges the idea that gender must remain fixed and reminds us that everyone’s identity deserves respect.

Help shape the future of trans health research!

The Trans Health Research Agenda project is recruiting transgender, Two-Spirit, and nonbinary adults (18+) in Canada to complete an online survey about priority research topics.

🏳️‍🌈 The Genderqueer Pride Flag

The Genderqueer Pride Flag represents people whose gender identity doesn’t fit traditional ideas of being exclusively male or female. Genderqueer can include people who identify outside the gender binary, across genders, or in other ways that challenge conventional gender expectations.

🏳️‍🌈 Who created it?

The Genderqueer Pride Flag was created in 2011 by genderqueer writer and activist Marilyn Roxie. The design was developed to give genderqueer people a recognizable symbol of identity, visibility, and community.

🏳️‍🌈 What do the colours mean?

💜 Lavender = Androgyny and a mix of masculine and feminine identities
🤍 White = Agender identities and people outside the gender binary
💚 Dark Green = Identities outside the traditional gender binary

Marilyn Roxie developed the flag in 2011 as genderqueer identities gained greater visibility. Its three colours represent experiences that don’t fit neatly into traditional gender categories, and it has since become a recognized symbol of genderqueer pride.

Welcome to Flag Friday! Each week we’re highlighting a different pride flag, its history, and the community it represents.

🏳️‍🌈 The Nonbinary Pride Flag

The Nonbinary Pride Flag represents people whose gender does not fit exclusively within the categories of man or woman. Nonbinary is an umbrella term that can include many different gender identities and experiences.

🏳️‍🌈 Who created it?

The Nonbinary Pride Flag was created in 2014 by Kye Rowan. It was designed to provide a distinct symbol for nonbinary people whose identities were not fully represented by other gender-diverse pride flags.

🏳️‍🌈 What do the colours mean?

💛 Yellow = Genders outside the traditional gender binary
🤍 White = People with many or all genders
💜 Purple = Genders that are a mix of, or between, male and female
🖤 Black = People who identify as having no gender

🏳️‍🌈 A little history

The flag was created as nonbinary identities became more visible and people wanted a symbol that represented the wide range of experiences outside the male-female binary. Since then, it has become one of the most recognizable symbols of nonbinary pride.

The Genderflux Pride Flag represents people whose gender intensity changes over time. Someone who is genderflux may feel their gender very strongly at times, more weakly at others, or sometimes not at all.

🏳️‍🌈 Who created it?

The Genderflux Pride Flag was created in 2015 by Tumblr user demifluid. It was designed to give genderflux people a distinct symbol for their identity and experiences.

🏳️‍🌈 What do the colours mean?

💗 Pink = Feminine identities
🩷 Light Pink = Demigirl identities
🩶 Grey = Agender or low-intensity gender
🩵 Light Blue = Demiboy identities
💙 Blue = Masculine identities
💛 Yellow = Nonbinary identities

The term genderflux became more widely used online as people found language to describe changes in the intensity of their gender. The flag was created to visually represent that spectrum and the many different ways someone may experience genderflux.

The Genderflux Pride Flag gives visibility to people whose experience of gender can shift in intensity over time. It reminds us that gender is not experienced the same way by everyone and that fluidity can be a valid part of someone’s identity.

On Saturday, September 19 from 4:00PM–8:00PM, we’re taking Pride to the patio for Pride Brewery Night. Come hang out with friends, meet some new people, enjoy the atmosphere, and spend an evening celebrating our amazing 2SLGBTQIA+ community and allies.

This is a casual, come-and-go event, so drop by for an hour or stay for the whole evening. There’s no agenda—just good company and a welcoming space to connect.
