🌈 Flag Friday: The Original Pride Flag

Welcome to Flag Friday! Each week we’ll be highlighting a different pride flag, sharing its history, meaning, and the communities it represents.

🏳️‍🌈 The Original Pride Flag

The Original Pride Flag was the first rainbow flag created to represent the LGBTQ+ community. Designed as a symbol of hope, diversity, and liberation, it celebrated the beauty and strength of a community that was demanding visibility and equality.

🏳️‍🌈 Who created it?

The Original Pride Flag was created in 1978 by LGBTQ+ activist and artist Gilbert Baker in San Francisco. Working alongside a team of volunteers, Baker hand dyed and stitched the first flags, which debuted during the city’s Gay Freedom Day Parade.

🏳️‍🌈 What do the colours mean?

🩷 Hot Pink = S*x
❤️ Red = Life
🧡 Orange = Healing
💛 Yellow = Sunlight
💚 Green = Nature
🩵 Turquoise = Magic & Art
💙 Indigo = Harmony
💜 Violet = Spirit

🏳️‍🌈 A little history

When Gilbert Baker designed the flag, he wanted a symbol that represented joy, pride, and the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. The original design featured eight colours, each carrying a specific meaning. Due to difficulties sourcing certain fabrics and producing the flag on a larger scale, the hot pink and turquoise stripes were eventually removed, leading to the six stripe rainbow flag that became recognized around the world.

🏳️‍🌈 Why it matters

The Original Pride Flag marks the beginning of one of the most recognizable symbols of equality and inclusion in history. Understanding its origins helps us appreciate the creativity, activism, and courage of those who came before us and reminds us that Pride has always been about celebrating authenticity, community, and the freedom to be ourselves.

🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜

Join us next Friday as we explore another pride flag and learn more about the many identities that make up our diverse 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Calling you to the shores of the Okanagan lake and beyond, it’s Syren Call!
Watch out for the rocky shores when you hear the siren’s call. Known for their alluring voices drawing you to your watery death, this siren’s song will draw you safely to shore, and will leave echoes in your mind. The first child of Freida Whales, audiences have been held captive by their songs from the deep for ages, so the myth says. This king is here to serenade and delight you. Hear the siren’s song with Syren Call.
