While we’re all waiting and counting down the days until winter returns, right now is the absolute best time to find your favorite mapping app and start practicing with it!

Getting to know your navigation tools on a freezing, windswept ridge in the middle of a whiteout is a recipe for disaster. Instead, use these warmer months to level up your skills while the stakes are low.

Here is how you can build that muscle memory before the snow flies:
Download the Apps Now: like Avenza Maps or CalTopo and explore their free features.
Import Local Maps: Practice uploading custom trail maps, scanning club QR codes, or downloading offline topographical regions.
Test on Local Hikes or Drives: Go for a summer walk, hike, or quad ride and practice dropping waypoints, tracking your route, and checking your coordinates.

JUNE 21 WAS THE SUMMER SOLSTICE
While everyone else was celebrating the "First Day of Summer," we know the truth:
This is the peak, and it’s all downhill from there.

From this day on, the sun stays down longer, the air gets crisper, and every sunset brings us one step closer to the first braaap of the season.
