📚 Join us for an important conversation about the culture of hockey in Canada.

SAVIS is pleased to welcome award-winning journalist Rick Westhead for a talk about his new book, We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada’s Troubled Hockey Culture.

The book takes an in-depth look at the darker realities within a sport deeply loved across Canada, exploring issues of abuse, hazing, and sexual misconduct, as well as the systems and institutions that have, at times, prioritized reputations over the safety and well-being of people.

Drawing on survivor stories, player experiences, and major hockey investigations, We Breed Lions gives voice to those who have been harmed while highlighting the growing movement toward safer, more respectful, and accountable sport environments.

When survivors reach out for support, your presence can be a powerful lifeline. We provide extensive, comprehensive training to fully equip and prepare you to guide and empower those in need.

Who We’re Looking For:
• Women & gender-diverse individuals (18+)
• Passionate advocates committed to supporting survivors
• Able to dedicate 20 hours per month

What You’ll Gain:
• In-depth online & in-person training in trauma-informed care
• Ongoing volunteer meetings to expand your knowledge, share experiences, and connect with a supportive community

Introducing SAVIS’ Quick Access Counselling Pilot Program! 💜

Sometimes, you need support with something that’s happening right now - without committing to a longer-term counselling program.

Quick Access Counselling offers survivors of sexual violence a free, single-session opportunity to connect with a trauma-informed SAVIS counsellor, focus on what matters most to them, and explore helpful coping strategies and next steps.

What you can expect:
💜 Open to survivors of all genders, aged 16+, including survivors of childhood sexual abuse
💜 A focused counselling session of up to 60 minutes
💜 Appointments typically available within approximately two weeks, depending on availability
💜 Flexible options: in person, virtually, or by telephone
💜 No commitment to an ongoing 12-session program
💜 Up to three separate Quick Access Counselling sessions within a 12-month period, depending on your needs

You are in control of what you choose to share. You don’t need to retell your experience or have everything figured out before reaching out. Together, you and your counsellor can decide what feels most helpful to focus on.
