Tribute Tuesday: Eric S. Gendron
July 11, 1980-April 3, 2001
Twenty-five years have passed since you left us, yet not a single day goes by that we don’t think of you. Your death left a void in all our lives that can never be filled. Your handsome, boyish looks, blond hair, blue eyes, beautiful smile, love of life and carefree spirit, and the loyalty and respect you showed your family and friends remain forever etched in our hearts.
Born in Ottawa, Eric was an energetic, adventurous little boy. As part of a military family, we moved to Germany when he was eight, where he embraced every opportunity to experience life. He played hockey in France, Italy and Switzerland, swam competitively at military bases throughout Europe, skied in Switzerland, and travelled through France and Spain. He saw the running of the bulls and a bullfight in Barcelona, explored medieval castles, and travelled the winding roads and tunnels of the Swiss and Austrian Alps. He was in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down and witnessed Canadian military vehicles heading toward the Gulf War. He experienced so much in his short life.
When we returned to Canada, Eric continued playing hockey and, at 19, joined the Army. He served with the Infantry, 3rd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment, and was doing very well, with a promising career ahead of him.
Eric was home on leave when his life was tragically taken. He went out that night and got into a car with a friend who had been drinking. He was just days away from deploying to Bosnia on April 6, 2001. At 1:45 a.m. on April 3, two O.P.P. officers came to our door and changed our lives forever.
If I had known
If I had known it was the last time I’d see you fall asleep,
I would have tucked you in more tightly
and prayed for the love in my heart you would keep.
If I had known it would be the last time, I’d get to see you walk out my door and down my steps,
I would have given you a hug and kissed you one last time.
If I had known it would be the last time that I’d hear your voice,
see the smile on your beautiful face, or feel your touch I would have told you more
Just how much you were loved
