On March 21st, the McGill African Students’ Society (MASS) hosted its Annual Gala, ORÍKÌ: Where Heritage Meets Excellence.

Inspired by the Yoruba tradition of oríkì, the evening was a celebration of lineage, identity, and the legacy carried across generations. Through fashion, performance, and shared moments, the night honoured the past, embodied the present, and stepped into the future of African excellence.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us and contributed to making this night so special. Your presence, energy, and support are what bring this vision to life.

This Gala would not have been possible without the dedication of our organizing team, led by Kayla Registre and Saroja Camara, alongside: Théry Flora Gahimana, Jeannine Kota Leno, Doriane Ursot, Sheena Kirichu, Oumou Ba, Johana Gaba, Aicha Hassan-Omar, and Vanessa Wright.

A special thank you to all the designers, models and performers whose talent, creativity, and artistry shaped the evening and brought ORÍKÌ to life.

We also extend our gratitude to our partners: SSMU and BISSI.

ORÍKÌ was more than a celebration. It was a space to honour heritage, uplift talent, and come together through culture.

On February 21st, the Annual Africa Speaks Conference (ASC) returned under the theme:
Beyond Borders: The Diaspora’s Hand in Africa’s Future.

ASC continues to create spaces where African and diaspora students engage directly with leaders shaping industries, institutions, and narratives across continents.

This year highlighted a key idea: the diaspora’s impact goes far beyond financial flows — it lives in knowledge transfer, digital innovation, cultural production, and global collaboration.

Over 100 attendees joined us for three dynamic conversations across education, tech, and culture, featuring incredible speakers including Amanuel (Aman) Melles, Dr. Khalid Medani, Christine Dikonguè, Dr. Segun Aina, Amaal Nuux, Sarahmée, Fatou Alhya Diagne, and Serge Mushinzimana.

This conference would not have been possible without the dedication of our organizing team, led by Lohann-Olivier MBIANDA, alongside: Jesugbemi Tunde, Jeannine Kota Leno, Shayennie Msampha-Walker, Muassua David, and Abigail Rukundo Akeza.

We also extend our gratitude to our partners: SSMU, BSN, the McGill Institute of Islamic Studies, BISSI, and the Dean of Arts Development Fund.

ASC is more than an event — it’s a space where the next generation steps into shaping the future.
