Mission Environmental Stewardship Society

MESS is a non-profit organization that delivers comprehensive waste diversion and anti-litter programming to the residents of Mission, B.C.

We recruit and encourage volunteers of all ages to take responsibility for the litter in their chosen block areas: residential, business or green space. We provide efficient tools for litter pick up, and give litter handling safety direction for those that commit to litter pick up. As part of our community, we participate in community events by setting up our information booths, provide activities

for the kids and help with event litter pick up management. We also organize annual community litter clean-ups, and target heavily littered areas. We work with local groups and concerned citizens to develop solutions for the litter problem in Mission. We also provide School District #75 with an education program that teaches students about litter: problems and concerns, and how to foster social responsibility among student. We encourage students to be pro-active in their approach to achieving a cleaner and healthier environment!

Join the Mission Environmental Stewardship Society and the Mission Downtown Business Association for a litter cleanup of Downtown Mission from 10AM-12:30PM on Saturday, October 3! Afterward, enjoy a free coffee at as a thank-you for your hard work.

Meet us at 10 AM in the Welton Common Parking Lot (7337 Welton St) to collect equipment and receive a safety orientation. If you’re able, please bring gloves and a water bottle.

Adopt a street, trail, stream, or park in Mission and help keep our community clean and free from litter and illegally dumped waste! 🌎

The Adopt-a-Block program has been active in Mission since 1994 and we currently have 133 volunteers helping keep various areas of our community litter-free! So far this year, Adopt-a-Block volunteers have removed 2,492 lbs of litter from Mission streets.

August 23 was a day full of learning, creativity, and environmental action at Litter Busters Day Camp in Centennial Park!🌎🌱

Our Litter Busters learned about the impacts of litter on our environment and what it means to be an environmental steward. We explored wildfire risks, impacts on human health, and ways we can come together to make a positive difference in our community.

We made toilet paper roll binoculars, environmental steward self-portraits, and played a fun wildfire simulation tag game!

Are you a teen or do you have a teen looking for volunteer opportunities in the environmental field?🌱 Consider joining the MESS Youth Environmental Stewardship Club (YES Club)!

The YES Club is a volunteer program for Mission middle and high school students ages 12–18. Members can gain volunteer experience, explore environmental issues, and receive mentorship while getting involved in meaningful work with a local non-profit.🌎

We are always accepting applications and can provide reference letters for volunteering with us!

We had so much fun at our first Litter Busters Camp of the year this weekend! 🌎☀️ Our Litter Busters cleaned up Griner Park, made new friends, and learned all about being environmental stewards!

We love receiving photos from our volunteers while they're out helping keep Mission clean! 🌎💚 Here are a few photos from one of our newest Adopt-a-Block volunteers, Lea, who has adopted a portion of 14th Ave.

We asked Lea why she decided to volunteer and here's what she had to say: "I love being involved and helping my community. It's such an easy thing to do, picking up garbage, that I've made it a regular part of my daily walk. A clean Mission is a happy Mission!"
