When Rotary helped launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988, the disease paralyzed more than 1,000 people worldwide every day, most of them young children. Since then, Rotary and its partners have reduced the number of polio cases by 99%, and in 2025, there were just eight cases of polio in the entire world caused by the wild poliovirus.
The GPEI estimates that polio vaccines have saved an estimated 20 million children around the world from paralysis. World Immunization Week, 24-30 April, is an opportunity to celebrate this work. As Rotarians, we are proud to be part of a network that not only cares deeply but puts action to that caring, through projects like this both locally and internationally.
It's easy to join and be a part of standing up for others, serving your community, and making a difference. Let us know in the comments if you'd like to know more.
