For Mathew and his mom, Theresa Joki, one memory stands out from their time with LABIS — a June 2023 trip to Edmonton, including visits to the zoo and the fort.
It wasn’t just about where they went. It was about getting out, sharing an experience, having some fun, and making a memory together.
These are the moments that have been part of LABIS for 40 years — opportunities for connection, friendship and experiences that stay with people long after the day is over.

For more than a decade, Michelle Neufeld has been part of the people, programs and everyday moments that make LABIS what it is. Her reason for continuing that work is simple: she believes in the people LABIS serves and in the difference that connection, support and meaningful programming can make.

As we celebrate 40 years of LABIS, Michelle’s reflection is a reminder that the strength of this organization has always come from the relationships built here — with participants, families, staff, volunteers and our community.

40 Days • 40 Stories — Halloween Through the Years 🎃💜
Some traditions at LABIS are about support. Some are about connection.
And some are just about having a lot of fun together.
Over the years, Halloween has become one of those traditions — costumes, pumpkin carving, decorations, plenty of laughs, and a chance for participants and staff to enjoy the day together.
Looking back at these photos, the costumes may change and the faces may change, but the spirit is pretty familiar: people spending time together, being creative, laughing, and making memories.
That’s an important part of LABIS too.
For 40 years, LABIS has been about more than programs. It has been about creating a place where people can connect, participate, celebrate, and belong.

💜 Remembering Jodi

This week, the LABIS family lost someone very special to us.

Jodi had been a core part of LABIS for decades — a participant, a friend, and a familiar presence whose smile could light up a room. She brought warmth, laughter, and joy with her, and she will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Jodi was part of so many memories here at LABIS, and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Our thoughts are with her family and everyone who loved her.

We will miss you, Jodi. 💜

💜💚 A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE LLOYDMINSTER MOTOR CLUB! 🚗❤️

We are incredibly grateful to the Lloydminster Motor Club - LMC for their generous $1,000 donation to LABIS!

The club raised these funds through their Season Closer Car Show in September and chose to make this donation in support of LABIS’s 40th anniversary. What an incredible example of a community coming together to make a difference!

A special thank you to Rachel Block- Magistad, President of the Lloydminster Motor Club, along with all the club members, organizers, volunteers, and everyone who attended and supported the event.

40 Days • 40 Stories — Remembering Neera Gandhi 💜

For more than 30 years, Neera Gandhi dedicated her time to volunteering and making a difference in the lives of others. After moving to Lloydminster with her family in 1992, Neera became involved with the Lloydminster & Area Brain Injury Society (LABIS), an experience she would later remember as one of the most meaningful parts of her volunteer journey.

Her commitment to helping others continued after relocating to Calgary, where she generously contributed her time to several community programs and organizations.
Neera passed away in 2025, at the age of 75.

As LABIS celebrates 40 years, we remember Neera with gratitude for her kindness, generosity, and the time she shared with our community. Her story reminds us of the lasting impact volunteers have on the people and organizations they support.

40 Days • 40 Stories — Mary Bielecki

Mary lived a busy and fulfilling life and was especially close to her family, including her nieces and nephews. At LABIS, Mary could seem quiet, but she was always involved. She enjoyed the friendships she made with other participants, and her gentle manner, kindness, sense of humour, and wonderful smile made her a special part of the LABIS community.
One memory says so much about who Mary was. A few years after Susan lost her husband, Mary gave her a card she had made herself and simply said:
“This is for you. You’re sad.”
It was a small gesture, but one filled with understanding and compassion.

Mary enjoyed playing cards — and she liked to win! She also loved colouring and painting, and her favourite colour was blue. Mary brought a quiet kindness to LABIS that people remembered long after spending time with her. 💙

40 Days • 40 Stories — Don & Jodi

For Don, LABIS has always been personal. As the father of Jodi, a brain injury survivor, Don developed a deep connection to the people LABIS serves — a connection that led to 22 years of service on the LABIS Board of Directors.

Over those years, some of his favourite memories have come from simply being part of the action: helping at fundraisers, visiting with people who attend, sharing a few laughs, and telling others about the work LABIS does in the community.

Don says he especially enjoys being part of the chatter at events and spreading the word about just how amazing LABIS is. His dedication reflects something that has always been at the heart of LABIS: families supporting families, people showing up for one another, and a community built around connection.

For Don and Jodi, LABIS has been part of that story for more than two decades. 💜
