“Why does it cost so much to adopt a dog?”

We get this question a lot—and it’s a fair one and we want to answer it honestly.

The reality is, every dog we rescue receives essential veterinary care before going to their new home—vaccines, spay/neuter, microchip, and any medical treatment they need to be healthy and safe.

On average, that’s about $1,200 per dog before they are ready for their forever home.

Some dogs cost far more. Nelson, Georgia & Ebony are examples of that right now.

Adoption fees don’t generate profit. They help us recover a portion of these costs so we can continue rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming more dogs.

Your adoption doesn’t just change one life—it helps us save the next one too.

When someone adopts, donates, buys a raffle ticket or becomes a monthly donor, they are not just helping one dog. They are helping keep the rescue pipeline open for the next dog who needs us.

Foster needed ASAP.

Lovely Alice came to us from Texas. She is a 27 pound coonhound mix, female.

She’s currently undergoing heartworm treatment and needs a foster or foster to adopt placement.

Her home should be quiet and one where she can spend lots of time with her people as she does have some separation anxiety. Her current foster mom says she will bark for a short while after she leaves, but then settles down. For this reason a single-family home where you don’t have close neighbors like you would in an apartment or a townhouse.

She was OK with the Foster’s cat.

She is a very special sweet girl and if you’re interested in fostering her, you can fill out the Foster application below.

We need to be transparent with our community.

Right now, SDRBC is nearly $10,000 in the negative. Our expenses this year have increased significantly because of more emergency medical cases, donations have dipped, and our 50/50 raffles are down more than 40% compared to last year.

That means we have had to make the heartbreaking decision to pause new intakes for now. We are currently committed to 4 new pups in June and that's all we can handle until we are all caught up.

And while we pause, the dogs already in our care still need us.

Nelson needs knee surgery, estimated at around $6,000.
Georgia needs airway surgery,, quoted between $6,000–$10,000, and then she can be safely spayed.

This is why the 50/50 matters. This is why donations matter. This is why monthly donors matter.

If you can help today, please buy a raffle ticket, make a donation, become a monthly donor, or share this post. 🧡

We are community-funded. The dogs have always relied on people like you.

We are heartbroken that we have fallen behind, but we remain 100% comitted to rescuing dogs and staying true to our mission while being transparent and compassionate.

Buy your 50/50 ticket before May 31 at 5pm. Tickets available here: https://smalldogrescuebc.rafflenexus.com/

Thanks Postman Dean's Dog of the Day for sharing our adoptable boy Bruno. Let’s get him into his new adventure home!! Share share share.

Look at this adorable face gracing my page as today’s DOTD! đŸ¶

Meet Bruno, a 4-year-old Lhasapoo mix who is currently looking for his forever home with the help of Small Dog Rescue BC Society. ❀

I’ve agreed to feature some pups from this wonderful rescue group in hopes of helping them find the perfect families where they can flourish and be loved.

Bruno is described as being full of energy and would love a family that enjoys daily adventures such as hikes and exploring trails. He’s also a big cuddler, so if you’re looking for a companion to snuggle up with on the couch at the end of the day, Bruno may be your guy! đŸ„°

If you are interested in Bruno, you can message Postman Dean and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Good luck, Bruno, and congratulations on being named Postman Dean’s Dog of the Day! 🎈🎉
