No girl should have to spend her childhood fighting for rights that should already belong to her.
Today, on the International Day of the Girl Child, we stand with girls in Afghanistan and around the world whose freedom, education, safety, and opportunities continue to be denied.
For Afghan girls, this is not just another day of awareness. It is a reminder of five years of classrooms left empty, opportunities taken away, and futures placed on hold. According to UNICEF, more than 2.6 million girls in Afghanistan have been denied secondary education since 2021.
But the injustice does not end at the classroom door. Afghan women and girls continue to face severe restrictions on their movement, participation in public life, and fundamental freedoms.
This year’s theme, “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights,” reminds us that education, protection from violence, and the freedom to make choices about one’s own life are deeply connected.
As the Afghan LGBT+ Advocacy Organization (ALAO), we stand for the rights and dignity of every girl, including LGBTQ+ girls and others whose experiences are often left out of conversations about equality and human rights.
We must also remember that Afghan girls are not simply victims of injustice. They are students, leaders, advocates, and changemakers who continue to show remarkable courage despite the barriers placed before them. Their voices deserve to be heard, and their leadership deserves to be supported.
🔺The world cannot continue to recognize what is happening in Afghanistan without demanding meaningful change.
We call on governments, international organizations, and civil society to keep Afghan girls’ rights a priority, support their access to education and protection, and hold those responsible for human rights violations accountable.🔺
To every Afghan girl who has been told what she cannot become: Your dreams are yours. Your future belongs to you.
Our solidarity does not begin or end on October 11.
Girls’ rights are human rights. No exceptions.
