In case you missed it, this past Friday the restoration team celebrated International Make a Difference Week at the Quadra Hill Nature Reserve. After discussing the restoration efforts at Quadra Hill during the past couple years, the team worked on forest restoration and ecological fuel management. This involved pulling down a Douglas-fir tree using a chain hoist system, managing fuel materials and creating conservation burn piles for biochar generation in the fall.

If you’re interested in getting involved, join us on the second and third Fridays of each month for similar ecological restoration projects. They are educational, fun, and productive in supporting our islands’ ecosystems. Visit our website for more information, and get in touch ahead of time to let us know you’ll be attending by emailing [email protected]

This coming Friday, June 5th, the restoration team will be celebrating International Make a Difference Week by meeting at the Quadra Hill Nature Reserve for an educational day of forest restoration and ecological fuel management.

Galiano Island has a legacy of industrial clear-cut logging that has resulted in huge swathes of simplified plantation forests on our landscape. These young monocultures lack diversity and increase wildfire risk. On Quadra Hill, we’ve been working for the past couple of years to model restorative forestry practices, integrating both wetland restoration and forest restoration.

On Friday, we’ll talk about the restoration we’ve done, and then there will be opportunities to contribute by:

- pulling down a Douglas-fir tree with a chain hoist

- managing fuels and creating conservation burn piles for biochar generation in the fall.

We’ll meet at 9:30 at the cul-de-sac at the end of Melissa Road (1000 Melissa Road). GCA staff will manage parking along the shoulder of Melissa Road, or on the Quadra Hill property depending on vehicle type. Snacks will be provided! If you want to join us for lunch, please bring a packed lunch, and water for the day.

Tools will be provided. Make sure you wear a pair of hiking boots with good traction, as well as long sleeves and pants. There is a chance of rain, so come prepared. FYI, there are no washroom facilities on this property.

We hope you’ll be able to join us for a fun, educational, and productive day! Please let Adam Huggins know ahead of time if you plan on attending, by emailing him at [email protected]

Feed the People Project Gets Provincial Recognition:
The Galiano Conservancy Association is proud to celebrate receiving the Heritage BC award in the category Honouring Indigenous and Diverse Cultures: Reconciliation, Redress and Expanded Recognition for its annual Feed the People workshop, which was in its 6th year in 2025.

This honour recognizes the powerful role of Indigenous leadership, cultural knowledge, and land-based practices at the heart of the initiative. At the ceremony held at Britannia Mine this month, Bobbi-Jo Basarab and Knowledge Holder Rosemary Georgeson accepted the award on behalf of GCA, reflecting the deep relationships and community spirit that guide this work.

As part of the broader Restoring the Balance initiative, Feed the People is advancing food sovereignty, cultural revitalization, and ecological stewardship, with impact reaching well beyond Galiano. The model is already spreading across the region, with the Mayne Island Conservancy hosting its first iteration of the program and the Salt Spring Island Conservancy expressing strong interest in bringing it to their community.

This award celebrates not only what has been achieved, but the growing momentum of this work across the islands and throughout the province.

Have you heard of Pacific Silverweed? This is a very special native species that will be available at our upcoming Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 9th from 10am-2pm!
Pacific Silverweed is a colourful perennial groundcover with silvery undersides, long red runners, and bright yellow flowers. While it thrives in moist areas such as streambanks, it is drought tolerant and very low maintenance once established. Pacific Silverweed is traditionally valued as a cultural food source-- its roots are highly nutritious and become sweet once steamed or roasted, containing enough amino acids to qualify as a complete protein!

Meet Chilean Guava! With less than a week until our Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 9th, this is a good time to highlight some of the more unique and interesting plants that are available from our nursery.
Chilean Guava is an upright evergreen shrub that flowers in late summer to early autumn with fruit appearing in late autumn, long after other fruit is done. The small pink-red berries are tasty right off the plant, with a unique herbal sweet flavour, and are best enjoyed raw and unprocessed.
This plant thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soil protected from cold, drying wind, and is best grown in a greenhouse with some extra protection in winter. It grows well in a large pot, making it easy to move to a more protected place in cold weather.
You can find Chilean Guava amidst a wide range of native and foodbearing plants behind our office building from 10am-2pm on Saturday, May 9th, alongside a diverse seed variety from the Seed Library of Galiano!
