Inclusion Alberta is thankful for our partnership with Ready, Willing & Able (RWA), a national partnership that is funded by the Government of Canada and is designed to increase the labour force participation of people with an intellectual disability or on the autism spectrum.

With the help of RWA, our Rotary Employment Partnership has created nearly 1,000 jobs to date across Alberta in diverse fields such as trades, hospitality, manufacturing, childcare, culinary, the arts and office administration. Real jobs for real pay.

Check out some of the jobs that have been created right here in our communities at places like Pembina, DHL Supply Chain, Clark Builders and Calgary Public Library!

Siobhan was able to secure a job at Costco in Okotoks through the Partnership, where she has been a valued employee since 2022. Siobhan’s role includes packing customer carts at check out, returning items to shelves, general store tidiness and during the summer months she also works in the garden center.

Siobhan’s manager, Kristen, says that customers frequently comment on Siobhan’s positive attitude and enthusiasm for her job, traits that Kristen says has a meaningful impact on other staff members as well.

Siobhan takes great pride in her work and says her confidence has flourished. With her savings from working at Costco, Siobhan was able to purchase a home of her own.

“Employers across the country say they can’t find enough workers. There is a solution, however, that continues to be overlooked. Roughly three-quarters of working-age Canadians with an intellectual disability or autism remain unemployed or underemployed despite being ready, willing and able to work. These two realities should not exist side by side.”

Hundreds of families responded to the CBC’s Elise Stolte’s survey sharing their experience with Alberta’s Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program.

When a family can access supports, it is life changing. But most sit on waitlist for years, losing precious early time where supports can matter the most.

Speech and behaviour regressing, parents losing their jobs, parental relationship breakdown, grandparents maxxing their credit cards to pay for a much needed break with respite. These are some of the stories of the estimated 20,000 families sitting on a waitlist for FSCD support in Alberta.

IN THE NEWS: An estimated 20,000 Alberta kids face waiting years to get therapy for disabilities

"Many parents of children already in the program said they see real improvements in the way their children cope with life. Some even shared how kids were now able to attend regular school programs because of the help they got early on.

But parents on the waiting list expressed despair. Many said that as they wait, their kids are getting kicked out of daycare and schools. They’re losing their jobs, taking on debt to pay for therapy, and sometimes seeing kids regress when they run out of money.”

For real life examples of how long waits for Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) are affecting Albertan families, check out the full CBC article on the curated news page of our website here: https://inclusionalberta.org/curated-news-content/
