In 1980, we began with an initiative to provide care to vulnerable populations in some underserved communities in Edmonton. A persistent toothache can make it difficult to eat, rest, concentrate or connect with others. At the same time, mental health challenges can make it harder to maintain oral health or access dental care. Each can influence the other.

For all of us, a toothache can make it difficult to eat, sleep, work, concentrate, or simply get through our day.

For Edmontonians experiencing homelessness, living with disabilities, mental illness or other forms of marginalization dental care isn’t as simple as booking an appointment.

At Radius, we believe everyone deserves access to dental care that is affordable, respectful, and responsive to their individual needs.

Our Dental Clinic provides low-fee, trauma-informed, barrier-reduced care in an environment where people are treated with dignity and compassion. We take the time to explain each step, move at a comfortable pace and help people feel supported throughout their visit because no one should have to live with dental pain simply because they do not know where to turn.

When someone is focused on finding a safe place to sleep, securing their next meal or managing an urgent health concern, dental care may have to wait. A missed appointment does not tell us how much someone values their health; it often reflects the barriers they are navigating.

At Radius Dental Clinic, we recognize the realities that can make accessing care difficult. By reducing practical barriers and providing compassionate, trauma-informed care, we help make it easier for people to return when they are ready.

Good food, great company, and plenty of fun at the annual Radius Community BBQ.

This gathering gives staff, volunteers, and community members an opportunity to step away from the every day, share some food and enjoy time together. Events like this strengthen the sense of belonging that’s at the heart of community health.

A very big, thank you to all the Radius staff and volunteers who gave their time, energy and care to make this day happen. From preparing and serving food to welcoming community members and keeping everything running smoothly, this celebration would not have been possible without you.

Everyone has a different reason for walking through our door.

For Gina, working at the Radius Dental Clinic is an opportunity to provide care that goes beyond treating teeth. It is about helping people feel respected, supported and more confident in themselves.

Meaningful change begins with listening, partnership and shared commitment.

Tricia Smith, President and CEO of Radius Community Health and Healing joined Alberta's Deputy Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services, the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Indigenous Health Division, members of their teams, and representatives from Alberta's four community health centers: Radius, Jasper Place Wellness Centre, The Alex, and CUPS.

Led by Elder Whiskeyjack and concluding with a shared feast of bannock and hamburger soup, the ceremony created space for connection and a collective commitment to action.

Together, we are committed to helping shape community health center programs and services where Indigenous people feel respected, welcomed, and supported when accessing culturally safe and responsive care.

This ceremony marks an important step in strengthening relationships with Indigenous organizations and communities, improving healthcare experiences, addressing barriers to care, supporting Indigenous-led approaches and advancing health equity in Alberta.

We are grateful to be part of this work and recognize that lasting progress depends on continued accountability, listening and action.

Fear, trauma, stigma and past experiences of judgment can make walking into a dental clinic feel overwhelming. Avoidance is not always a sign that someone doesn’t care. Sometimes, it is a way of protecting themselves.

Mental health doesn’t exist in isolation.

Neither does oral health.

Dental pain can affect sleep, nutrition, confidence and the ability to focus on daily life.

Unfortunately, experiences of trauma, anxiety, mental illness, unstable housing, stigma, or limited income can make it much harder to access and continue receiving dental care.

People experience better outcomes when services work together instead of asking them to navigate multiple disconnected systems, repeat their story at every door or manage complex referrals without support.

That is why Radius brings healthcare together through a relationship-based, integrated model of care.

Our teams understand that treating one immediate concern is often only part of the picture. By connecting primary care, mental health supports, dental care and other essential services, Radius can respond to the broader circumstances affecting a person’s health and wellbeing.

Integrated care helps reduce practical barriers, strengthens continuity and creates opportunities to build trust over time.
