It's our last day for the pop up shop on the Halifax waterfront! Instead of showing the products we sell, I thought I would show you the clean up adventures we have!

Watch out ! Johns Cove Beach is covered in nails and screws. We aren't sure how this happened but we don't want anyone to get hurt.

Kristen went to clean some of it up this evening and we have a small team headed there again tomorrow at low tide with magnets. (Join if you want) Thank you to the person who let us know about the mess!

This is so sad on many levels. As someone who has very fond memories running on the beaches barefoot, I want my children to have the same opportunity. But slowly, we are losing these spaces because of debris. Debris like broken glass, old wire lobster traps and messes like this that more than likely came from a beach fire.

These Beach Button earrings will be uploaded to our website soon, but we wanted to give our followers a chance to check them out first!

We sell items like this to help raise funds so we can continue doing clean ups even when there is no government funding available. I personally make these earrings. I write what each set is made from which usually includes chip bags, mylar balloons, snack wrappers and more! ❤️

On the Digby Neck and Island we often find balloon buoys stuck in rock crevices.

It's amazing to think of how they got there. To think of how much force the ocean has to squish them that far into the basalt rock. I enjoy removing them and thought I would show you how I do it!

1. Locate the target 🎯
2. Use a knife, with steady pressure and cut 🔪
3. Remove and dispose of appropriately 🗑

A few things to ask yourself before doing this type of removal:
🌊 Can I remove the balloon without busting it so it can be reused? (They are $$$)
🌊 Is this balloon buoy holding up tonnes of rock that may indeed squish ME? (SAFETY FIRST)

I said a couple days ago the big reason I commited to cleaning the shorelines is because of my two boys. So I figured I would introduce you to them: Riley and Archie.

I always say... I won't force them to do the clean ups... BUT I WILL force them to:

🌊 Go Outside
🌊 Be around good people
🌊 Get lots of fresh air

Lucky for me, both of my boys make their own choices to help out sometimes. My oldest has really started getting more into the clean ups! (As a Mom I am so proud) He makes some of our smaller rope baskets and he is excited to be our ATV guy in a few years, too!

I went for an adventure after working the Waterfront Pop Up Shop and found lots of treasures ❤️

I always make sure to take the not so pretty debris too. I find you get better peices of seaglass that way. It's like a little THANK YOU from the ocean.

You will see in my photo of "keepers" there are some very sharp cobalt blue pieces. We get these pieces repurposed through the local Susan Hill who makes earrings, necklaces and keychains! These tourists REALLY love the seaglass. (Me too!)

We have some big jumps this month because we worked REALLY HARD 💪🏻

We try our best to collect data on the most common items we find. This way, we know (and other organizations) what to target for changes. Our lobster band number is crazy high this year because we made it Year of the Lobster Band and are trying hard to bring awareness to two things:

1. Lobster bands ARE NOT biodegradable and can take 10-15 years to break down into microplastics. There are biodegradable lobster elastic bands but they cost about twice as much. *** These bands have writing on them indicating they are actually biodegradable.

2. Not all the lobster bands washing ashore have been coming from the fishing boats. There have definitely been some processing and holding facilities that were dumping them out their pipes. We are working with Kent Smith the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture to regulate this better.
