With 18,000 poppies as a backdrop, Oakwood Terrace kicked off its Poppy Tribute Concert at the Woodlawn United Church in front of an audience of more than 300 people.

His Honorable Mike Savage, ONS Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia unveiled a158 poppy Wall of Honour tribute to those who lost their lives in Afghanistan.

He spoke about Craig Blake who died in an IED explosion just outside of Kandahar, on May 3, 2010.

He noted that Blake symbolizes the service and sacrifice made by those who serve and protect and "someone we owe our gratitude and respect."

He left the audience with the message to strive to build a more peaceful world.

A very special thank you to our wonderful “professional” judges from Eastern Passage Village Veterinary Hospital, who took on the challenging task of choosing our winners. We couldn't have asked for a better team of animal experts to judge this fine flock!

Today's trunk or treat was a huge success, and Cindy Morash and Michelle Grosvenor-Thompson from The Beacon were there to give treats to the more than 700 kiddos.

Thanks to all who braved the cold and made their kids afternoon a wonderful time.

Earlier today, The Beacon sent the following statement to Col. Tara Willis, 12 Wing Commander, and Chief Warrant Officer James McCarron. Please stand with us in supporting our community:

On behalf of everyone at The Beacon, we want to extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire 12 Wing family following the tragedy at CFB Wainwright.

We know the military is a close-knit family, and when tragedy strikes, its impact is felt far beyond the base where it occurred. Here in Eastern Passage, Cow Bay, and Shearwater, our ties to the Canadian Armed Forces run deep. We share in your sorrow and grieve alongside you for the lives lost and those who have been injured.

Please know you, your colleagues, and all affected families are in our thoughts. We mourn with those who mourn and hope that, in the days ahead, you find strength and comfort in knowing your community stands with you.
