October 13, 2026: International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction
Resilience Starts at Home: together, we can build a safer future!
How can we build a sustainable future if our homes, families and communities remain vulnerable to disasters and climate change?
The United Nations estimates that the global economic cost of disasters reaches US$2.3 trillion annually, including indirect and ecosystem impacts. UNDRR
Every family deserves a safe, affordable and resilient home that protects lives, dignity and livelihoods. Floods, droughts, wildfires, heatwaves and other hazards threaten communities, deepen poverty and reverse development gains.
Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Assembly (AMCIA) believes that resilience begins with compassion, preparedness, community participation and collective responsibility. Through community support, humanitarian assistance and inclusive initiatives, AMCIA strives to support people in need and strengthen community well-being.
Women, children, youth, older persons, persons with disabilities and vulnerable families must be included in disaster preparedness, response and recovery. Climate action, environmental responsibility, sustainable living and disaster awareness are essential to building stronger communities. We must invest in preparedness before disasters strike, provide timely assistance during emergencies, and support rehabilitation and recovery afterwards.
Together, we can promote safer homes, stronger neighborhoods, accessible early warnings and climate-resilient communities.
Resilience is not built by one organization alone it grows when families, communities, governments and humanitarian partners work together. This October 13, let us turn awareness into action and compassion into lasting change.
