Hello October! 🍂 Every October, we recognize Foster and Kinship Caregiver Month, and the incredible people who open their homes, hearts, and lives to support children and youth when they need it most.

To every foster and kinship caregiver who has helped create safety, stability, healthy development, and meaningful connections along a child’s journey: thank you. Your care can be life changing.

Whether you provide short-term care, long-term care, or kinship care your role matters deeply to the children, youth, and families we support.

The impact that teachers have on our society and community is profound. 🏫🚌🎒

As trusted guides and sources of inspiration, teachers help young people build confidence, think critically, and feel supported as they learn and grow.

With their enthusiasm and dedication, they inspire future generations.

Every day, we’re thankful for teachers and the ways they help guide young people as they navigate the world.

We’re especially thankful for the dedicated teams at Hull School and Children’s Village School, who go above and beyond to support students , helping them learn, grow, and thrive.📚🧑‍🏫

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day to honour and recognize generational survivors and their families of residential schools in Canada.

For more than a century, thousands of Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their homes and families, placed in residential schools, assimilated into European-Canadian culture, losing their own culture, identity, and ways of being.

Every day presents opportunities to learn more, engage in meaningful conversations, and acknowledge the trauma faced and endured by many to amplify the voices of Indigenous peoples.

In the words of Hull’s Elder, Casey Eagle Speaker, through the spirit of reconciliACTION, we foster a commitment to healing through understanding, respect, and celebrating Indigenous culture year-round.

Hull Services’ Indigenous Relations is an Elder-guided initiative that supports and connects Indigenous children, youth, family members, as well as community members, to cultural resources and activities 🧡

It’s the first day of fall! 🍂

When the seasons change, it’s important to check in with our mental health to reflect on how we are feeling and pay attention to what’s coming up for us.

New seasons can bring a mix of emotions, from enjoying beautiful changing colours and cooler temperatures, to adjusting to shorter days and the challenges that can come with them

Some self-care tips:

☀️Take a walk in the crisp air
🕯️Light a fall scented candle
✍️Journal your thoughts
📚Read a good book under a blanket
🧁Bake your favourite treat

🤗And be kind to yourself, always

After a busy summer with so much on the go, it’s okay to slow down, take some deep breaths, and recharge! 💙💛

What are some things you like to do in the fall to support your mental health? Let us know!

With fall around the corner and harvest season upon us, the Subnivean Farm crew, with help from the wonderful folks at Fresh Kitchen (thank you for the amazing donation of meat!) plowed ahead with another Harvest Lunch for the staff and youth at Hull!

From homemade chips to coleslaw to kale ceasar salad to chocolate zucchini bread and apple cake, this lunch came directly from the farm.

Subnivean produces THOUSANDS of pounds of produce a year for the surrounding community, and this lunch is a celebration of the hard work that goes into the farm, from planting and nurturing to harvesting and enjoying the fruits of that labour.

This harvest celebrates the union of sun, soil, and soul, reminding us that a good harvest feeds not only our bodies, but our spirit, too.

The farm is so much more than a farm – it’s a therapeutic milieu where youth can grow and heal. It offers the opportunity to experience the full cycle of growth, from planting to harvest, while gaining a sense of accomplishment as they see their hard work flourish, learn about sustainability, and connect with the land. 🥕 🥔 🍅

September marks a turn in seasons and the opportunity to harvest the incredible produce made at Subnivean Farm.

Watching Subnivean's growth over the years into a place that provides both sustainability and sustenance as well as a sensory rich environment that helps the youth on campus learn and develop regulatory strategies has been truly amazing.

The farm holds three huge gardens that grow a variety of fruits and vegetables like potatoes, carrots, lettuce, kale, beans, sunflowers, beets, cabbage, apples, broccoli, and so much more. 🍅🥔🍠

By spending time in nature in a therapeutic milieu and being connected to the earth and soil, the youth at Hull learn valuable skills.

Subnivean produces thousands of pounds of produce each year and supports the broader community by providing food boxes to local families. 🫜🫑🍎

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

But so is every day.

It’s estimated that 4,500 people die by su***de in Canada each year—a loss that has a devastating impact on families and communities.

This number also underscores the need to drive systemic change, strengthen prevention efforts, and ensure people have access to the support they need.

This year’s theme is “Changing the narrative on su***de.”

Through open and compassionate conversations, being there for one another, and holding space for people, we can raise awareness and transform the stigma around su***de.

Help is always available, such as through our Mental Health and Addictions Navigator: hullservices.ca/navigator 🫶💙💛
