To improve and lengthen the lives of those who suffer from fatal lung disease and in particular but not exclusively for those with Cystic Fibrosis in Alberta and beyond. Inspired by the challenges facing those with Cystic Fibrosis (“CF”), The Summit Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis is dedicating all energy and fundraising dollars into increasing the awareness of CF within the community as well as ad

vancing the research to another far reaching level. We will do this with the assistance of the talented senior researchers within the Snyder Institute of Chronic Diseases at the University of Calgary – Faculty of Medicine.

This is a startling fact!

This is a startling fact!

⚠️ Did you know people with CF are at increased risk for colon cancer (5-10X the general population and 25-30X Post Transplant), due to mutations to the CFTR gene, which is known to be a tumor suppressor. CF carriers also have higher risk. Those with CF have higher rates of other cancers, including pancreatic, cervical and breast cancer.

💜 Education can save lives. Let’s spread this vital information.

Is CF-related pain an under-recognized symptom of CF?

You can participate in this study via a short online survey through Elevate to help researchers at Southern Cross University in Australia find out. With the results of this anonymous survey, researchers hope to influence policies and procedures in routine cystic fibrosis care and find out whether pain is under-recognized and under-managed by healthcare practitioners. In addition, the study hopes to shed light on modulator research, as current Australian findings report that modulator therapies have no effects on the prevalence and severity of pain in CF.

Next week, we’ll be sharing this study with members of Elevate, our community consultation program. Register for Elevate before April 16th to participate.

We’re thrilled to host Dr. Lucas Hoffman, a pediatric respiratory physician and microbiologist. His laboratory studies the microbial determinants of diverse chronic pediatric diseases, especially the multiorgan complications of the genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF). As a physician, he cares for children with CF and a variety of other chronic lung diseases. He directs the Center for CF Microbiology, a National Resource Center supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation dedicated to helping researchers and industry partners develop new therapies for the infections that afflict people with CF. He is also the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington.

Following the lecture, an informal reception will be held in the HMRB atrium from 1:00-2:30 pm, and members are encouraged to attend. Snyder trainees and postdocs are also invited to a roundtable lunch with Dr. Hoffman on November 15, 2024, from 10:45-11:45 am in HRIC 4AC56.
