Light Up The World (LUTW) is a Canadian non-profit providing access to solar energy for rural Peru.

Light Up The World (LUTW) is a Canadian non-profit organization focused on the principle that access to energy changes lives. We implement renewable energy projects in remote, un-electrified villages where often the only option families have to light their homes is to burn kerosene. Access to clean energy for lighting and communications is transformational for families living in poverty. It creates a healthy and safe home environment, enhances opportunities for education and contributes to economic development by increasing disposable income and encouraging entrepreneurship. Our project approach emphasizes building partnerships with local organizations, training and local ownership - all vital achieving sustainable development impacts.

One year ago, we installed a solar energy and connectivity system at the Huarcaya Health Post in Arequipa, Peru.☀️

Today, we’re glad to see how it continues to support the healthcare team in their daily work.

Located nearly 5,000 meters above sea level, Huarcaya is home to around 180 people. Some families walk 4–5 hours to reach the health post.

Thanks to reliable electricity, healthcare workers can now use essential medical equipment, including oxygen concentrators, respond to emergencies at night, and stay connected through satellite internet.

This has been especially important in critical situations. The team was able to help stabilize a patient experiencing severe breathing difficulties before he was transferred to a hospital. They also treated a child who needed stitches late at night.

We continue working to ensure more communities have access to reliable energy and connectivity, improving their opportunities and quality of life. 💙

Behind every solar panel installed, every classroom lit, and every family connected, there are partners who believe what we believe: energy changes lives. ☀️

This year, thanks to Silfab Solar, S-5!, Starlink, INTIC, Rotary Club of Calgary Fish Creek, and SkyFire Energy, we brought solar power and satellite internet to 3 schools, 2 production plants, 25 homes, 1 community center and 1 health post.

Today, more than 1,000 people have access to electricity and connectivity, and with them, to education, health care, and new opportunities. 💡

From the Amazon to the Andes, every project was made possible because of you. Thank you for walking alongside us! 💙

Last week, during his time in Edmonton, our Executive Director, Aaron Cohen, visited the NAIT campus and met with one of LUTW’s valued partners. 🏫

Over the years, several groups of NAIT students and faculty have travelled to Peru to take part in LUTW solar projects in remote communities. Together, they have supported installations in schools, health posts, and other community spaces, helping expand access to reliable electricity and internet connectivity.

The visit was an opportunity to reconnect with the NAIT team, reflect on the projects completed together, and continue conversations about future collaboration.

This partnership gives students the chance to apply their skills in real settings while contributing to projects that improve access to education, healthcare, and essential services in communities across Peru.

We are proud of what this collaboration has made possible and look forward to what comes next. ☀️

𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼, 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘆𝗼, 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗼. ☀️

On September 8, we celebrated two years since the Ccorimayo Health Post began using solar power.

Today, 150–300 people are served at the health post each month, with specialists visiting the community once or twice a month and laboratory campaigns taking place on site.

The project also brought satellite internet to the health post, keeping the team connected and enabling virtual consultations. At the same time, solar power supports the use of essential equipment for patient care.

Care hours have been extended, and the team can attend to emergencies during the night, helping keep the health post ready to respond when the community needs it.

Two years on, we’re proud to celebrate this project and all that it has made possible in Ccorimayo.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 ☀️

2025 was an important year for Light Up The World (LUTW).

Together with communities, partners, volunteers and supporters, we continued bringing reliable solar energy and connectivity to remote areas of Peru, helping schools, health centres and communities access new opportunities.

Throughout the year, we completed 5 community projects, installed 29+ kW of solar energy, directly benefited 1,860 people, and supported more than 200 rural students.

We also reached an exciting milestone: since beginning our work in Peru in 2011, LUTW has now installed more than 100 kW of solar capacity and impacted over 13,000 people.

Our 2025 Annual Impact Report shares some of the projects, partnerships and stories that made this possible, from schools and health clinics in the Andes to productive-use initiatives in the Amazon.

A Season of Impact Across Peru☀️

Over the past few months, the LUTW team, together with our valued partners and volunteers, has traveled from the high Andes to the Amazon, bringing solar energy, electricity, and connectivity to communities where reliable power can transform everyday life.

Edmonton students, come meet Light Up The World!🌍

On September 16, LUTW will be participating in the University of Alberta Go Abroad Fair, held at University Commons on North Campus.

The fair brings together organizations and institutions from Canada and around the world to introduce students to international work, volunteer and learning opportunities.

Stop by our booth to learn more about LUTW’s work bringing solar energy and Sustainable Internet to remote communities in Peru, hear about the people and places behind our projects, and discover ways to become involved in work that connects energy access with education and community development.

Powering Local Production with Solar Energy ☀️

SAIPE’s processing plant now has access to reliable, clean energy.

Light Up The World has completed the installation of a 5.6 kWp off-grid solar system, including 14 solar panels, 5kWh of LFP battery storage and a 3 kVA inverter.

The system is designed to generate electricity to power essential equipment at the plant, including an industrial oven, plantain slicer, flour mill, lighting, satellite internet, and office electronics.

With reliable electricity, SAIPE can operate its equipment more consistently, improve its processing activities and make better use of the plant’s facilities.

This project was made possible through the collaboration of SAIPE, S5!, Silfab Solar and Starlink, whose contributions helped bring reliable energy and connectivity to the processing plant. Together, these partners are supporting local production and creating new opportunities for the surrounding community. 🤝☀️

For LUTW, energy access is about more than electricity. It is about giving local organizations the tools they need to strengthen their work, support local production and create lasting opportunities. 🌱

Powering brighter futures.☀️

We are deeply grateful to SkyFire Energy for donating solar panels that will support future LUTW projects in rural Peru.

These panels will help bring reliable electricity to schools, health centres and community centers. In rural schools, each project can directly benefit around 30 students, while reaching approximately 200 people across the wider community, including teachers, families and local residents.

In rural health clinics, a solar energy project has supported essential healthcare services for up to 1,000 people, helping medical staff provide better and more reliable care in communities where access to electricity is limited.

This donation is much more than equipment. It represents better learning conditions, stronger healthcare services, and lasting opportunities for rural communities.

Thank you, SkyFire Energy, for this generous contribution and for supporting LUTW’s work throughout the years. 💛
