CFUW Aurora/Newmarket is committed to realizing the potential of all women. CFUW is a world of women helping women. Join CFUW and build a better world!

With 110 clubs across the country, and approximately 9,000 members, we are one of the few self-funded, non-partisan women's groups in the country. CFUW is the largest of the 67 affiliates of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW). Our Aurora/Newmarket club was founded in 1957 and has been growing steadily ever since. We now have more than 220 members and are one of the largest clubs in Canada. CFUW is both a social club and a service club. It is a place to make lasting friendships, engage in social activities, and participate in the community.

Environment Moment: Milk Bag Weaving

Following up on last month's bonus tip, we’re spotlighting milk bag weaving!

Several retired teachers from our club belong to ARYCT, a group that collects milk bags and prepares them for weaving.

They meet monthly to weave small and large waterproof sleeping mats for local shelters, unhoused populations across the GTA, and international disaster relief efforts.

It takes roughly 500 milk bags to make just one large mat. Each one keeps hundreds of plastic bags out of landfills while providing warmth and protection off damp ground.

How you can help: Our Outreach Committee will be collecting clean outer milk bags at each of our in-person meetings!

We did it!

Walking this morning for Yellowbrick House with full hearts after raising $3,220—hitting 107% of our goal!

An organization like CFUW is only as strong as its members—and we are fortunate to have that strength in spades!

Every single woman who belongs to our club brings something truly special. Whether you continue your membership year after year, serve on our committees, or simply step up and ask, "How can I help?"—know that every contribution is valued.

We are so deeply grateful for the incredible breadth of dedication in our club. From members who joined us 3 years ago, to those who have been dedicated pillars of our club for 25, 30+, or even 50+ years: your passion, wisdom, and energy drive everything we do, from our advocacy work to our scholarship fundraising.

This year, as we celebrate these milestone anniversaries, we also pause to honour two long-time members who passed away in May 2025 and remain close to our hearts:

🕊️ Becky Haggith, who would have celebrated 25 years with our club. Becky was deeply devoted to advocacy and education. A heartfelt thank you to Laura Robbins for paying such a beautiful tribute to Becky.

🕊️ Sandra Davis, a member for over 50 years who missed receiving her formal tribute as a Lifetime Member. Sandra was known for her love of books, adventure, and all things garden—even generously offering her garden for our 2025 Home & Garden Tour fundraiser. Our warm thanks to Lynn Havard for sharing such a meaningful tribute to Sandra.

To each and every one of our members—past and present—thank you for making CFUW Aurora/Newmarket such an extraordinary sisterhood.

What a fantastic launch to our Speaker’s Series!

We had the pleasure of hosting an informative and dynamic presentation from three “shedders”, Anton Coetzee, Glen Sharp, and Harold Reiter from The Men’s Shed Aurora.

It’s inspiring to connect with an organization that shares the same core values as CFUW: making a positive difference in our community while cultivating lifelong friendships.

At the Aurora Men’s Shed, men find a safe, welcoming space to connect, share skills, work on meaningful community projects, and foster great camaraderie and well-being.

Did you know? There are now over 300 Men's Sheds across Canada, empowering men to connect and give back to their local neighbourhoods!

Thank you Anton, Glen, and Harold for an entertaining, insightful, and memorable kickoff to our series!

We have grateful hearts! Thank you Market Brewing Company for your incredible support of young women in our community!

Thanks to the $4,740 raised during MB Bingo back in May, we are well on our way, enough to fund 1.3 of our $3,500 scholarships for 2027 graduates!

So many amazing local organizations benefit from Market Brewing’s Charity Bingo, and our CFUW dabbers had a great time supporting Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers on their full house night! Six happy winners, including one for our group!

Special thanks to Bingo Bill, the Brew Crew, and Smash ‘n’ Grab Burgers for making it such a fantastic night out!
