Led by survivors for survivors, BridgeNorth is a charitable organization that exists to end s*x trafficking in Canada. We provide direct service to individuals and families impacted by s*x trafficking, create public education and awareness that trains the public and professionals to recognize, prevent, and address s*x trafficking, and we advocate on behalf of trafficked persons for systemic change

. We are trusted experts and advisors who work with community partners, educators, public service sectors, and leaders at all levels of government to make this vision a reality.

Today's digital world has made it easier than ever for predators to access and groom youth through social media and gaming platforms.

Some youth face additional risk factors that can increase their vulnerability, including homelessness, unstable or difficult family situations, mental health challenges, and disabilities. These vulnerabilities are never the cause of exploitation, but they can be targeted and exploited by those seeking to harm and take advantage of young people.

The more we understand the realities of trafficking and exploitation, the better equipped we are to recognize the warning signs and help keep youth safe.

Trafficking doesn’t usually start with violence, it starts with filling unmet needs.

Posing as boyfriends or friends, traffickers lure and groom youth by making them feel loved, cherished, like they belong, or like they can have a better future.

Sexual trafficking is insidious. Public education is one of our best defences.

1. Talk regularly about online safety: Create a judgement free space where the young people in your life can tell you about any uncomfortable interactions they experience online.

2. Review privacy settings together: Limit who can view their profiles, contact them, comment on their posts, or see their location.

3. Teach them to recognize red flags: Encourage them to be cautious of anyone they don't know in real life who asks for secrecy, personal information, photos, money, or an offline meeting.

4. Get to know the platforms they use: Learn about the apps and gaming platforms they are spending time on and understand their privacy features and tools.

5. Remind them they can always come to you: Create a loving and caring space where the young people in your life always feel safe coming to you if something feels wrong for them, and that they won't be blamed or punished for asking for help.

LifeEdge is our program for youth who have experienced s*xual exploitation or trafficking.

Most of those we serve in LifeEdge have yet to turn 16.

In LifeEdge, we provide trauma and survivor-informed support and walk alongside youth to help them heal, rebuild their lives, and thrive.

In order to exploit youth, traffickers often pose as boyfriends, friends, or mentors, tricking youth into believing they have their best interests in mind and are the only one who “gets” them. Because of this, many youth don’t understand they are victims of a crime.

A big part of our programs is working with youth to help them understand what healthy, loving relationships look like, and how to watch out for signs that someone is taking advantage of them.

This is a picture of one of the whiteboards in BridgeNorth’s program space, where we share positive messages with the youth we serve to help them build healthy boundaries, self esteem, and identify when they are not being treated well.

The youth we serve are incredibly brave and we are grateful to have opportunities like this to remind them of how awesome they are and that they deserve to be treated with the utmost respect

Meet Elevate: BridgeNorth's new survivor and trauma-informed workplace readiness and leadership development program for women and gender-diverse survivors of s*x trafficking and s*xual exploitation aged 18–29.

The program is designed to support participants in building confidence, developing practical workplace skills, and working toward greater independence, stability, and long-term well-being.

What's Included?

✨Structured program schedule, up to five days per week
✨Paid participation at minimum wage
✨Workplace readiness training and professional skill development
✨Leadership, communication, organization, and executive functioning skill-building
✨Industry certifications and training opportunities based on participant interests (e.g., Smart Serve, First Aid, aesthetics, customer service, and more)
✨Individualized support and goal planning
✨Employment preparation,( e.g., resume development, interview practice, and job search support)
✨Opportunities to build professional references and workplace experience
✨Connections to community resources and ongoing supports

Financial control is a common method traffickers use to hold power over those they are exploiting. By gaining control over an individual's living expenses and systematically eliminating their financial independence, they can make leaving an exploitative situation feel impossible.
