A big thank you to everyone who joined us last night for our online public training session: Understanding & Responding to Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking.

We ended our session by leaving everyone with one very important message:

To not let this information stay in this (online) room and to share what they learned with their partner, children, friends, and colleagues - to keep talking about what human trafficking looks like in Ontario, who is being impacted, and what we can all be doing to prevent this crime and support those who have experienced exploitation. Through awareness, we can prevent this crime and protect youth.

We are so grateful to all those who showed up, ready to learn and take action, and we can’t wait to host another training session in the future!

The work BridgeNorth’s staff does to support young people impacted by s*xual exploitation & trafficking is incredibly important, but it’s also challenging and emotionally complex.

Last week, our team gathered for a festive lunch (cooked lovingly by our executive director), taking time to connect and relax outside of the work they do and give thanks for the amazing work BridgeNorth has and will continue to accomplish.

We’re so grateful for the people who make up BridgeNorth and the dedication and care they bring to this work every day. We’re equally grateful to the youth we serve, for their courage and willingness to show up for themselves.

We hope you had an amazing long weekend with your loved ones 🧡

Confidence is prevention ❤️

A big part of BridgeNorth’s work is helping girls build the confidence and resilience that reduces vulnerability to things like grooming and exploitation.

That’s why we were SO grateful to join the Georgina Community Church Brave event for girls aged 12-17 at Georgina Communtiy Church last weekend.

We love every opportunity to connect with youth and encourage them to recognize their worth.

Today we honour survivors and remember the children who never returned home while reflecting on the ongoing impacts of colonial policies and actions that continue to affect Indigenous communities across Canada.

11 years after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its 94 Calls to Action, progress remains slow. 41% of the Calls to Action have either not been started or have stalled, and only 14 have been fully completed.

At BridgeNorth, we know that gender-based violence and s*xual exploitation do not exist in isolation. They are deeply connected to the lasting impacts of colonialism, systemic discrimination, intergenerational trauma, and the ongoing inequities faced by Indigenous communities. Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people continue to be disproportionately impacted by violence and exploitation, making reconciliation a matter of justice and safety.

Today is a reminder that reconciliation requires more than reflection. It requires action. It means listening to Indigenous voices, advocating for Indigenous rights, supporting Indigenous-led solutions, and holding ourselves and our institutions accountable to the commitments that have yet to be fulfilled.

As we wear orange and reflect on the truth of our history, BridgeNorth recommits to continuing to learn and advocate for the rights and safety of Indigenous Peoples.
