WE REMEMBER โ€“ BLACK SATURDAY โ€“ 7 FEBRUARY

Today marks 17 years since the devastating Black Saturday bushfires of 2009, one of the darkest days in Victoriaโ€™s history.

Yallourn North Urban Fire Brigade remembers the 173 lives lost, the families and communities forever changed, and the thousands of homes and livelihoods destroyed. We honour the incredible bravery and dedication of the firefighters, emergency service personnel, and volunteers who stood in the face of unimaginable conditions to protect others.

Black Saturday reshaped the way we prepare for and respond to bushfires. The lessons learned continue to guide our commitment to community safety, preparedness, and resilience.

Today, we pause to reflect, to honour those impacted, and to stand with all who continue to feel the effects of that day.

Together, we remember. ๐ŸŒฟ

A big shout out to Latrobe City Council and their 2025/26 Quick Response Grant program which allowed the Brigade to purchase a battery powered blower. This piece of equipment has already been used at a motor vehicle incident allowing firefighters to quickly remove debris from the roadway making it safe for other traffic.

Also we would like to thank TM&H Mitre 10 Moe for there help in purchasing this equipment.

We now have removed all petrol powered equipment from our fire fighting vehicles providing greater safety for our members.

Tomorrow, an Extreme Fire Danger Rating is forecast with a Total Fire Ban in place across the entire state of Victoria from midnight tonight.

This is a very serious fire weather day.
If a fire starts, it will spread rapidly, be unpredictable and difficult to control.

๐Ÿ”ฅ What this means:
โ€ข Fires can start easily and escalate quickly
โ€ข Lives and homes are at significant risk
โ€ข Fire and emergency services may not be able to respond to every incident

๐Ÿšซ Total Fire Ban โ€“ NO fires permitted
This includes:
โ€ข No burn-offs or campfires
โ€ข No fire pits, solid fuel BBQs, smokers or incinerators
โ€ข No activities that could cause sparks (grinding, welding, mowing, machinery)

โœ… What you should do now:
โ€ข Review your fire plan
โ€ข Make sure your property is fire-ready
โ€ข Avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas
โ€ข Monitor official warnings and weather updates
โ€ข If you live in a high-risk area, leaving early is the safest option

โš ๏ธ Do not wait and see. Decisions made early can save lives.

Please take this seriously and help protect yourself, your family and your community.

Stay informed via official emergency channels and by downloading the VicEmgenency App.

๐Ÿ”ฅ 1st Training for 2026! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Tonight our members kicked off the year with a great training session, looking at key aspects of attending a fire, including control, access, tasking, and a range of suppression methods.

What a fantastic way to start 2026! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿš’

As the weather warms up, itโ€™s an important reminder for our community to stay safe and stay aware. Make sure you:
โ€ข ๐Ÿ“ฒ Download the VicEmergency App
โ€ข ๐Ÿ”ฅ Check Fire Danger Ratings daily
โ€ข ๐Ÿ  Have a bushfire survival plan in place

Most importantly, ensure everyone in your household knows the plan and what to do in the event of extreme weather or a fire.

Stay safe, stay informed โค๏ธ๐Ÿš’
