Help shape the future of biodiversity in Latrobe City. 🌳

The draft Nature Plan is now available for community feedback. The plan will guide how biodiversity is protected and enhanced across the municipality over the next 10 years.

The draft plan has been informed by community feedback received in 2025 and outlines priorities for managing Council's bushland reserves, waterways and other natural areas.

Have you noticed little yellow flowers popping up all around?

There's a chance that those little yellow flowers are not meant to be here - it could be invasive gorse!

Gorse (Ulex europaeus) is an introduced woody w**d often seen infesting paddocks and roadsides in Gippsland. It can be identified by the stiff sprawling branches covered in spiky leaves and yellow flowers. During flowering season (around now!), small yellow pea flowers cover the stalks; it is often confused with broom, another group of w**ds seen in one of the photos below.

So, why should we control it?
Gorse is a highly invasive shrub that can grow up to as high as 7 metres, creating impenetrable thickets that sprawl across the landscape. It impacts agricultural land, native ecosystems and some urban areas by taking up precious land and resources. It's currently listed as a W**d of National Significance (WONS) which illustrates how we should all ensure we manage this invasive species as best we can.
