Now that the weather is getting a little warmer, why not come and visit us at 12 Hazelwood Road, Morwell. This Wednesday, 19th August from 11.00am-2.00pm is our normal Open Day. At 2.00pm we have our Member’s Gathering where members, friends and the general public have an informal chat on their connection to Morwell. Join us for a cuppa and some afternoon tea and reminisce the afternoon away. For any queries please don’t hesitate to contact us on 0409 436 019.

You will see many photos such as this in our collection. This photo is of the Morwell CWA branch choir sometime in the 1960s. We only have two names – Back row 3rd from left is Gwen Medew and 2nd from right is Miss Kath Green. Maybe you or some of your family can help us with other names.

You might wonder what do Historical Societies collect? We collect all sorts of things that connect dates, times, buildings, streets and a whole lot more.

Take these three calendars for example. Bob Whykes calendar tells us the address of the business and that he was an automatic transmission specialist. We can see this was in 1991, when Morwell’s area code was 051.

GR Billingsley tells us that not only was George selling and buying real estate, he was also an auctioneer and a valuer and had businesses in Morwell, Moe and Traralgon in 1978 and area codes for phone numbers weren’t used at this time.

A L Hare tells us not only were they a garage and engineering works, Les was a carrier, had livery stables and you could hire a car day and night even in 1923 and they had telephones (obviously not many by the short telephone number).

You may think this information is incidental, but researchers need to connect information with facts to ensure all details are correct.

When we research we not only go by word of mouth, we also need proof such as these items. So when you are going through loved ones keepsakes, don’t forget if it means nothing to you, a historical society near you might be interested. If any of these calendars have triggered your memory and you have some old ones stashed in a cupboard we would love to see them. If you aren’t ready to part with them yet, we can take a copy for our records.

Don’t forget we are open tomorrow Wednesday, 5th August from 11.00am-2.00pm. Come out of the cold; our rooms are heated plus we will give you a cuppa and light refreshment. What better way to spend a cold winter’s day, reminiscing about your connection to Morwell with our volunteers. Hope to see you there.

It’s March 1960. Morwell High School is having their swimming sports.

Photo 1 shows so much history. Were you competing? Who are the officials? Look at the fashion of the officials, the cars in McDonald Street and the houses across the road. Were you there cheering your friends on? Did you live in one of those houses and spend your time at the pool. We would love to hear from you.

Photo 2 Shows a diving display; a highlight of the day by Gippsland Champion Robin Baker, a student at the school.

Don't forget if you would like to see more of Morwell's history, come and see us at 12 Hazelwood Road, Morwell. Our Open Days are the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays and last Sunday of the month (Feb-Nov) 11.00am-2.00pm.

Were you in the first intake at Morwell High School in 1957? Do you remember planting pine trees out at Driffield? Our photo shows L-R Greg Brinsmead, Peter Tatterson, Unknown (the person holding the mallet), Wayne Stonehouse, Mr Slattery (principal), Christine Lipski and Nine De Bono all having fun in the mud.
