Lions Club of Werribee

The Lions Club of Werribee was chartered in March 1961 as the 177th Lions Club in Australia. We operate in the Western area of Melbourne, in the country suburb of Werribee some 30 kms west of Melbourne, the capital of Victoria.

The Club is actively involved in community work within the City of Wyndham, distributing more than $1,000,000 in past years to charities, welfare and community groups.

With like-minded people, we provide real change & create opportunities in our communities. Some of our projects include;

Congratulations to Lion Doug Mullett on receiving his Life Membership Award!

For more than 25 years, Lion Doug has given his heart and energy to the Lions Club of Werribee — in various roles from member to community liaison to Secretary to President and much more.

He has served as our President not once but twice, in 2003–2004 and again in 2018–2019. He has guided our Peace Poster program, inspiring young people to share their voice through art. He has organised car park management for countless community events. He has mentored member after member, always ready with a steady hand and a science teacher's sharp mind.

Doug brings knowledge, energy, and enthusiasm to every age group he meets. His humour is legendary, his reliability unmatched, and his heart for service unwavering.

Doug, thank you for 25+ years of showing us what true Lions leadership looks like. Your dedication reminds us all that service isn't a title — it's a way of life.

Congratulations, Lion Doug Mullett — a true inspiration to us all!

Supporting the Mental Health of Young People: A Presentation by James

At our meeting on 18th June, the Lions Club of Werribee welcomed James, an experienced psychotherapist and coach, who spoke on a topic close to the heart of every parent, grandparent, and community member: supporting the mental health of young people.

James gave a thoughtful overview of youth mental health in Australia, reminding us that a young person who seems to simply be "going through a normal phase" may, in fact, be quietly struggling and could benefit from support to access appropriate help. He spoke about the influence of social media and other pressures shaping young people's lives today, alongside some sobering statistics on the current state of youth mental health in our community.

With decades of clinical and teaching experience across Australia and the United States, James brought both expertise and warmth to the topic, encouraging members to look a little closer, ask a little more, and never underestimate the difference a caring adult can make in a young person's life.

Members left with a deeper understanding of the challenges facing young people today, and practical ways we can all play a part in supporting them. On behalf of the Lions Club of Werribee, we thank James for so generously sharing his time and expertise with us.

Here in Victoria alone, we're part of five Districts — 201V1, 201V2, 201V3, 201V5, and 201V6 — with our own District 201V2 home to more than 70 clubs, including Werribee, Deer Park, Point Cook, Altona, and many more across Melbourne's west.

Stronger Together: Deer Park & Werribee Lions Celebrate a Joint Changeover 🦁

What a night! Lions from the Lions Club of Deer Park and the Lions Club of Werribee came together at The Hoppers Club for a joint Changeover Dinner — and it turned out to be something special.
Instead of holding two separate events, our clubs decided to mark the handover of leadership together, side by side. Members from both clubs had the chance to network, swap stories, and start talking about future projects we can champion as a team. The energy in the room said it all: when Lions clubs join forces, the impact only grows.

The evening also marked a special moment for our club, with the induction of two new members, Lion Jonathan and Lion Jon, into the Lions Club of Werribee. It was wonderful to see members from both clubs come together to welcome them so warmly — a true reflection of the spirit of the evening.

It felt fitting, too, given our shared history. The Lions Club of Deer Park has been serving its community for 50 years, and the Lions Club of Werribee has been doing the same for more than 60 years, having just celebrated its 65th Charter Anniversary. Two proud legacies, one shared commitment to service.

This is one step closer to bring clubs with in the district 201V2. More joint activities with clubs across our district, 201V2, are already in the works, because we know that whatever we can achieve alone, we can achieve so much more together.
One thing every Lion has in common: together, we make an incredible difference.

Wyndham Relay for Life 2026 — A Heartfelt Thank You

On Saturday 2nd May, the Lions Club of Werribee proudly took part once again in the Wyndham Relay for Life at the Victoria University oval in Werribee — a deeply moving event that remembers those we have lost to cancer, stands beside those living with it, and raises much-needed funds for research into this insidious disease.

For more than 20 years, our club has walked this track. And for more than 20 years, two extraordinary Lions have led the way — Lion Bob and Carol Kochy.

Bob and Carol's commitment to Relay for Life is nothing short of inspirational. Year after year, with quiet dedication and boundless heart, they have spearheaded our club's participation — organising, encouraging, walking, and rallying our members and the wider community around this vital cause. Their fellowship is the thread that has held our Relay for Life journey together across two decades. We are profoundly grateful for everything they do.

A huge thank you to every single person who supported the Wyndham Relay for Life event this year. Though numbers were a little smaller than in some past years, the spirit was extraordinary — and in excess of $40,000 was raised for cancer research. That is a remarkable outcome and a testament to the strength of the Wyndham community.

It was a deeply moving day:

To remember loved ones who have passed
To support those living with cancer today
To hope for a future where this disease is defeated
To every Lion, every supporter, every walker, every donor — thank you. 100% of every contribution goes directly to Relay for Life, and together, every step and every dollar adds up to real change.

To Lion Bob and Carol — thank you for once again leading us with such grace, commitment, and love. We could not do this without you.

65th Anniversary Celebrations - Lions Club of Werribee

Series 5 — Thanking All Our 65th Anniversary Attendees

A Full House. A Full Heart. A Night to Remember.
What a night. What an absolutely magnificent, joyful, unforgettable night.

On Friday the 27th of March 2026, the ballroom at The Hoppers Club was filled to the brim — over 100 guests, Lions, partners, dignitaries, families, and friends — gathered together under one roof to celebrate sixty-five extraordinary years of the Lions Club of Werribee.

From the moment the first guests arrived to the final raised glass at the end of the evening, the room buzzed with the kind of energy that only true community can create — laughter, fellowship, shared stories, warm embraces, and a deep sense of belonging that transcended clubs, districts, and generations.

To every single one of you who joined us — thank you.

🦁 To our District Governor, Executive Team, Past District Governors, and visiting dignitaries — your presence elevated this evening to something truly extraordinary

🦁 To the Lions from clubs across our District and beyond who travelled to celebrate with us — your fellowship is the heartbeat of Lionism

A truly heartfelt thank you to every guest who travelled near or far, who dressed up, showed up, raised a glass, shared a meal, and shared a memory with us. A full house is more than a number — it is a statement. A statement that this community values service. That Lionism is alive and thriving in Werribee. That sixty-five years of We Serve still echoes loud and proud.

Looking Forward — The Next Adventure Begins.

The 65th Anniversary may be behind us, but the journey is just beginning. We are already setting our sights on bigger, bolder, more ambitious projects — initiatives that will:

🌱 Deepen our impact on the families and individuals who call Wyndham home

🌱 Bring our District and sister clubs together for larger joint service projects

🌱 Open up new and adventurous community partnerships — with schools, emergency services, youth programs, and local businesses

🌱 Strengthen our facility, our reach, and our voice in the community we love

We cannot wait to share what comes next — and we hope you will continue to walk alongside us as we step into the next chapter together.

Series 3 — Thanking the Contributions

Sixty-Five Years of Glorious Service.

What have we done in sixty-five years? Where do we even begin?

✨ Raised and distributed over $1 million to charities, welfare groups, and individuals in need

✨ Marched proudly on Anzac Day, laying wreaths at the Werribee Cenotaph in honour of those who gave everything

✨ Stood beside the CFA and emergency services through bushfire, flood, and disaster

✨ Served the legendary sausage sizzles — including for stranded V/Line commuters who needed more than a bus replacement; they needed a warm smile and a snag! 🌭

✨ Organised "Werribee '84" — one of Australia's largest country music festivals — drawing 20,000 fans to Werribee Park

✨ Hosted the annual Charity Golf Day — a fixture in the local social calendar for decades

✨ Built the main barbeque area at Lions Village Licola

✨ Donated wheelchairs, Hart Walkers, and — in one uniquely touching case — a Braille typewriter to a student who simply wanted to do his homework

✨ Funded Story Dogs to nurture literacy in our youngest learners

✨ Gifted Hops the Hearing Dog to change one woman's daily life at RAAF Williams, Laverton

✨ Recycled over 7 million pairs of spectacles globally through Recycle for Sight

✨ Championed the Youth of the Year Quest and the Lions Peace Poster Program

✨ Rebuilt a school in East Timor — because a Lions badge knows no borders

✨ For twenty-one consecutive years, led brilliantly by Lion Bob Kochevatkin, walked in Relay for Life — raising over $70,000 for Cancer Council Victoria

✨ Financed and built Wyndham Lodge (now Baptcare) — still caring for our most vulnerable today

And we did it hand-in-hand with Wyndham City Council, VicRoads, Victoria Police, CFA, SES, Rotary, and so many magnificent partners — because the best service is collaborative service.
