Human Right’s Day is observed annually around the world on 10 December. It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world’s most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human rights (UNHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, s*x, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. The UDHR is a global blueprint for international, national, and other local laws and policies and a bedrock of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

The 2025 Theme – Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials is to reaffirm the values of human rights and show they remain a winning proposition for humanity.
December 10 marks the last day of the 16 Days of Activism beginning on November 25, reminding everyone that violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights. During the 16 Days of Activism, Soroptimist Clubs have raised awareness to end violence against women and girls via events and the media and advocated for digital platforms to take responsibility and increase surveillance and protection online for women and girls.

Soroptimist International is committed to standing up for the rights of women and girls and ending all forms of violence against women and girls.

Clear, modern laws can help stop online violence before it spreads. Effective legislation should focus on prevention through education, deterrents, swift justice pathways for survivors, that ensure the consequences match the severity of digital crimes. This means updating existing laws to reflect the realities of online harm, to train law enforcement and judiciary on digital abuse, and to create specialised courts or procedures for handling these cases efficiently. Modern problems require modern legal solutions.
