Today we are acknowledging Indigenous Literacy Day! A national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' stories, cultures and languages 📖 💙

This year's theme, 'Country is Our Teacher', highlights the importance of learning the stories of Country passed down from one generation to the next.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation works with more than 495 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities creating connections to language, stories and culture. The foundation provides the tools and resources communities request, empowering them to shape the literacy futures of their children.

What stories or lessons from Country have shaped your learning? ✨️

🫁 Asthma Week is recognised from September 1-7 🫁

This year's theme, 'Women and Asthma', is raising awareness about the disproportionate rate of women that carry the burden of living with asthma, including First Nations women.

Women are more likely to have asthma due to hormonal changes across different stages of life that can influence airway inflammation and asthma control. These changes can occur during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause.

For First Nations women, the impact of asthma can be further affected by social and environmental factors, contributing to higher rates of hospitalisation and mortality rates compared with men.

💬 Have a yarn with your Aboriginal Health Worker, nurse or GP about managing your asthma and ways to keep your lungs healthy.

Statistics are referenced from the ABS National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health survey from 2018-19.

🦴 Bone Health Awareness Trivia 🦴

Did you know? Smoking and heavy drinking can lower bone mineral density, disrupt calcium balance and increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

Healthy bones are an important part of healthy ageing and can help reduce the risk of falls and fractures later in life.

What steps can you take today to stay strong for yourself and your mob?

💬 Have a yarn with your Aboriginal Health Worker or GP about ways to protect your bone health.

🦴 Bone Health Awareness Trivia 🦴

Did you know? Having chronic conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease or diabetes can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis, especially for our older mob.

Osteoporosis is often called the 'silent disease' as there are no symptoms, until someone fractures or breaks a bone.

Bone density scans are important for our older mob as it helps detect the disease early. Do you know a Senior or Elder who may be due for a bone density scan?

Encourage them to yarn with their GP about their bone health.

August 28th marks Wear It Purple Day! 💜

Today is about raising awareness of the impact that bullying, harassment, and discrimination have on LGBTQIA+SB young people. Every young person deserves to feel safe, supported, and proud of who they are.

This year's theme, 'The Colours of Courage', celebrates the many different forms of courage shown by LGBTQIA+SB young people, allies, and communities every day.

We recognise the unique challenges our young q***r mob face including racism, discrimination, and exclusion. It's important that we support them and create safe, inclusive spaces where they feel seen, valued and like they belong.

Today, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and courage of LGBTQIA+SB young people and reaffirm our commitment to creating communities where everyone can thrive.

On Tuesday, Kalwun's Child, Youth and Family Services team had the opportunity to attend a private screening of our new cinema advertising campaign!

The campaign is about raising awareness of the need for foster and kinship carers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, while highlighting the importance of connection, culture and belonging. It encourages community members to consider the role they can play in supporting children and young people to maintain strong connections to family, community and identity.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Natasha and Franki (shown in the pictures) for being part of this campaign and helping bring this important message to life with authenticity and heart.

We would also like to give a special thanks to Ozcowilliams Cinema Advertising and Wirrim Media for helping make this campaign possible.

The ad is now screening at Event Cinemas Robina for the next three months, helping us share this important message with the wider community.

We're incredibly proud of the final result and look forward to the awareness, conversations and opportunities it creates across our community 🙌
