The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict was established in November 2001 by the United Nations.

In the words of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: 'We must use all of the tools at our disposal, from dialogue and mediation to preventive diplomacy, to keep the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources from fueling and financing armed conflict and destablising the fragile foundations of peace."

The United Nations works to research and fund activities and programs that support peacebuilding and recovery of natural resources that may have been exploited or could be exploited by those in greater power.

This day marks a significant factor in ongoing conflict and strife across our globe, especially during these troubling times.

Storms. Heatwaves. Droughts. They are becoming all too common in Australia.

Human activity is contributing to the rapid changes in our climate which in turn contributes to the extreme weather conditions we are experiencing. When you burn a fossil fuel to turn on your home's lights, heater or the diesel engine in your car, you release greenhouse gases like CO2 (carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere and trap the solar radiation we receive from the sun. This trapping leads to the temperature of our climate to rise and this rise is fuelling climate disasters.

We need to fight for a move beyond fossil fuels! Fight for clean energy and electrify the inventions we've already made! Support the protection of climate science and step into the frontiers of the fight.
