Tamworth Historical Society: Calala Cottage Museum

Tom McClelland will be the guest speaker at the June Tamworth Historical Society Meeting, and everyone is welcome to attend and hear him talk about local history. Tom has written a number of books on the history of the Tamworth region, including Dungowan. He will be talking about those books, his story, how he writes, and what he is working on now.

This free event will begin at 7pm on Wednesday 17th June at Calala Cottage Museum, 142 Denison Street, West Tamworth. Tom McClelland’s presentation will be followed by a light supper and hot beverages. All welcome - we look forward to seeing you there!

Rainy day? Our volunteers can still give guided tours of the Calala Cottage Museum complex! Our collection is displayed in several buildings, and we use umbrellas when walking between the buildings during wet weather. ☔️

Calala Cottage Museum is open for guided tours 11am - 3pm Fridays and Saturdays. We can also host group tours and special events at other times on request. 🙂

A Seduction Rose, which we have planted at the Rodgers Arbor, is a cultivated rose variety prized for its captivating beauty and romantic symbolism. It’s often used in romantic gestures, dramatic floral arrangements or as a focal point in gardens designed to evoke emotion and allure. This makes it the perfect background for weddings or vow renewal ceremonies under the Rodgers Arbor in the grounds of Calala Cottage Museum.

Two members of the Tamworth Historical Society were recognised during today’s National Volunteer Week Award Ceremony and celebrations in Bicentennial Park.

Natalie Willsallen was awarded the 2026 Adult Volunteer of the Year for her volunteer work with the Tamworth Little Athletics Club, the Tamworth Historical Society, and the Western Wolves Women’s Football Club.

John Vickery was recognised in the Outstanding Years of Service category for his more than 20 years of service with the Tamworth Regional Film and Sound Archive, Friends of the Gallery, the Tamworth Historical Society, and Tamworth Astronomy Club.

In a week’s time, members of the Tamworth Historical Society will be at the National Volunteer Week Celebration in Bicentennial Park, 10am - 2pm.

There’ll be a free sausage sizzle, displays & activities, entertainment & stalls and the Volunteer Awards presentation at 12 noon.

We look forward to seeing you at Bicentennial Park, Tamworth on Saturday 23rd May!

This Wednesday 20th May former Tamworth councillors Phil Betts and Helen Tickle will be our guest speakers, sharing reminiscences from their time in local government. This is to mark 150 years of local government in Tamworth.

Everyone is welcome to join the Tamworth Historical Society at 7pm Wednesday 20th May at Calala Cottage Museum, 142 Denison Street, West Tamworth. We look forward to seeing you at this free event, a light supper will be served following the presentation.

Starting tonight, Thursday 7th May, until Sunday 10th May, the Fitzroy Street Plaza will be lit up with projected images from the Tamworth Historical Society! From 6pm - 10pm each night see how Calala Cottage Museum has evolved over the past 50 years under the care of the Tamworth Historical Society 🙂
