Some more information on snake fungal infection problem in SE Queensland!

People who love Australia’s reptiles could unwittingly carry deadly fungal diseases from one animal to another. But this is easy to prevent.

New hide boxes just off the printer, these are just prototypes but feature a sliding lid which will be secured with screws and a sliding cover for the hide entrance, again secure by a screw. The concept is a single print for the main part of the box making it easy to clean with no joins. Securing the lid and front opening means you can safely lock a snake into the hide, remove the hide for transport, cleaning the enclosure or other maintenance on the enclosure.

Caution venomous snake on the rear will be more vibrant red, and the species can be easily modified!

Dimensions are 250mm x 200mm x 80mm

A few weeks ago we added to further information to our training and made freely available on our website, about reducing the transmission of reptile fungal pathogens….we were unaware of any formal study at that stage, but a recently published paper now supports what we have previously said.

Dangerously venomous, harmless! So what’s the big deal!

At Snakehandler we do not refer to pythons as harmless, did you know they have over 100 teeth, in six rows! Two on the lower jaw and 4 on the upper jaw, recurved to hold onto prey, these teeth can do harm….they are by definition a python not a harmless snake.

Degrees of venom, dangerously, mildly and weakly venomous refer to the venoms LD50 rating, it’s not talking about humans necessarily!

While Taipans (pictured), Browns and tigers are capable of killing a person, so is a bee sting! It’s not just the venom itself that is a risk to people, but the fact a foreign protein is being injected into your body! This can cause other issues such as anaphylaxis!

So at Snakehandler we will mention venomous and non venomous reptiles, pythons and elapids, but never degrees of venom and never as harmless!

We have one very happy Boiga! Our brown tree snake has moved into her new digs and she loves it! It’s great to be able to set up bioactive enclosures that are not 100% glass, these new single piece pvc enclosures have proven to be worth getting in. This one is 900mm high 600mm deep and 600mm wide, soon we will have these available in our online shop for pick up from our office or delivery for a few. Postage via Australia Post will not be possible due to the sizes.

We have been working with Modern-rium to get this looking so good. Just let us know if you are interested in more information about our new enclosures as we are placing an order soon.
