Today, we remember three Victoria Police members who lost their lives in the line of duty on 12 October, in 1902 and 1988.

Although off duty, on 12 October 1902, Constable Richard Johnston 4356 responded to a neighbour’s report that a man had attempted to abduct her eight-year-old daughter. He pursued the suspect and confronted him in Milton Street, Elwood, where he was fatally shot. His actions reflected his commitment to protecting his community, even when off duty.

On 12 October 1988, Constable Damian Eyre 26483 and Constable Stephen John Tynan 25080 attended a report of a suspicious abandoned vehicle at Walsh Street, South Yarra. The officers were deliberately lured to the location and ambushed, both losing their lives. Their deaths led to an intensive investigation and became one of the defining tragedies in the history of Victoria Police.

Our thoughts are with the Tynan and Eyre families who had their lives changed forever on that tragic day, and who continue to feel the loss. After the shocking events of that day, the community rallied behind Victoria Police and the families, from which emerged the Blue Ribbon Foundation, which was initially named the Tynan and Eyre Foundation. The first hospital project that the Foundation funded was the Tynan and Eyre Diagnostic Centre Alfred Hospital in 1993.

Today, we honour Constable Johnston, Constable Eyre, and Constable Tynan for their service and sacrifice. Their lives will not be forgotten.

As September comes to a close, we pause to remember three Victoria Police members whose lives were lost in the line of duty.

- Constable Philip Cabot
30 September 1858

Philip was 32 years old when he died in the line of duty.

- Constable David McGrath 4819
1 October 1915

David was 42 years old when he died in the line of duty.

- Constable Arthur Currie 6886
1 October 1926

Arthur was just 26 years old when his life was lost in the line of duty.

More than a century separates some of these dates, but the importance of remembering remains the same. Behind every name on the Victoria Police Honour Roll is a life, a family left behind, colleagues, and a community.

Today we remember Senior Constable Maurice Moore, who died in the line of duty on 27 September 1986.

Maurice was on duty in Brougham Street, Maryborough, when he intercepted a vehicle being pushed along the street at approximately 2.15 am. Maurice was overpowered by the man he had detained, while making enquiries about the vehicle. His police revolver was taken and he was fatally shot. Maurice was just 34 years old, leaving behind his wife Heather and their young children, Stephen, Kathryn and Paul. The loss of Maurice changed the lives of his family, friends, colleagues and the Maryborough community forever.

Thirty years after his death, Maurice’s service was honoured with the opening of the Maurice Moore Urgent Care Centre at Maryborough Hospital, together with a memorial garden at the local police station.

The Urgent Care Centre was made possible through the support of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, the Maryborough Branch, and the local community.

Today, the facility continues to provide emergency care to the Maryborough community, a lasting legacy of Maurice’s service.

We are shocked and saddened by the tragic death of the Police Constable Mia Lay, who was killed in a car accident while serving the NSW community.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mia’s family and all of her colleagues, friends and loved ones, and we stand in solidarity with the NSW Police Force.

Her loss comes only days before all of Australia marks the National Police Remembrance Day - Blue Ribbon Day on the 29th of September, an occasion when the nation stops to honour all of our fallen Police Officers.

The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation remains steadfast in our work to remember the service and honour the sacrifice of the police officers killed in the line of duty, and to strengthen the community respect for the dedication and commitment of all our currently serving officers.

Despite the passage of time, their service and sacrifice will always be remembered.

- Superintendent Robert Crofton Taylor
25 September 1863

Superintendent Taylor was accidentally shot and killed while cleaning his revolver at his home.

- Senior Constable Thomas Holt 2775
25 September 1893

Senior Constable Holt suffered serious internal injuries after being thrown from his horse when it swerved to avoid a flock of sheep while he was investigating a case near Bailieston. His health progressively declined following the incident, eventually forcing him to resign from Victoria Police. He passed away on 25 September 1893.

Today, we remember Robert Taylor and Thomas Holt and honour their service to the Victorian community. Their names remain on the Victoria Police Honour Roll, ensuring their stories continue to be remembered.
