Last week our Club visited the Victorian Scout Heritage Centre in Mackie Rd, East Bentleigh. We proudly donated funds for a new defibrillator. An interesting museum where a team of scout leaders meet and categorise the history of scouting in Victoria, and an interactive display where younger scout members visit to learn about Scouts Victoria. At certain times of the year, the museum is also open to the public on open days.

This week, the club farewelled John Mason OAM, a long-standing and much-loved member who contributed greatly to many areas of community life and was a long-standing member of our Club.

Many of us attended John’s funeral at the church in Wickham Road, Moorabbin, this week — a church his father had helped build. It was a fitting celebration of a life well lived.

John was a community leader, a respected businessman, a dedicated Rotarian, a sailing club member, and a committed contributor to his church. He was also a man of intellect, with a love of philosophy and poetry, and brought a dry sense of humour to those fortunate enough to know him well.

He was known for his fairness and sound judgment, often called upon to adjudicate matters with balance and integrity. In leadership roles, he was highly regarded and respected by all who worked alongside him.

Above all, John was a devoted family man to his first wife, Rosemary, his second wife, Margaret, and his four children, whom he raised with care and strong values.

Across his many years of service, John took on numerous leadership roles and earned many accolades. He was admired, respected, and warmly regarded by many.

Congratulations, John, on a life well lived. You will be greatly missed.
