For people who’ve had difficult experiences with health services, having a familiar, non‑judgemental nurse makes a real difference.
Trust helps people seek care earlier — and stick with it.

What does a homelessness nurse actually do?

UnitingCare's homelessness nurse provides everyday healthcare many of us take for granted. From wound care, medication support, chronic condition management, and referrals, to follow‑ups.

They’re a consistent, trusted presence in a system that can feel hard to navigate.

This National Volunteer Week we say thank you to our incredible UnitingCare volunteer family. Quite simply, we couldn’t do what we do without you.

Over the past year at UnitingCare, 9340 volunteers contributed more than 1.26 million hours of compassion, connection and care across our services. Every hour represents lives touched; a conversation, a moment of comfort, a reminder that no one is alone.

As one volunteer reminds us why it matters: “Knowing you’ve made a difference and helped someone consider life again - that’s everything”, another touchingly shares the benefits of giving back: “Volunteering has helped me grow into the person I hoped to become.”

That’s the power of volunteering. In fact, 74% of our volunteers say it’s had a positive impact on their lives, while 94% believe they are making a meaningful difference in the community.

To every volunteer: thank you for your time, your heart and your humanity. You are the beating heart of our organisation.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, now is the time.

Healthcare shouldn’t depend on having a fixed address.

On the Gold Coast, UnitingCare’s homelessness nurse provides practical, compassionate healthcare in the community. She's meeting people where they already are.

This approach helps remove barriers and makes care more accessible, respectful, and effective.

Youth Week in Seventeen Seventy was all about connection, creativity and making space for young people to be heard.

At Connected Youth Café, hosted by Gladstone Regional Council, young people helped shape the day through art, conversation and community connection.

Our Discovery Coast Youth Service team loved being part of the event alongside families and local partners. One of the highlights was a collaborative artwork designed and created by young people, which became a shared expression of identity and creativity across the day.

It was a lovely example of what can happen when young people are given space to contribute, connect and feel part of their community.

Cost of living pressures aren’t just financial, they’re emotional.

As household budgets tighten, many people are carrying more stress, uncertainty and anxiety than ever. When money feels scarce, it can also change the way people think about risk, quick wins, and coping strategies.

At the UnitingCare Gambling Help Service (GHS), our teams are hearing directly from people who are feeling the pinch. We’re speaking with individuals and families who are juggling rising costs, debt, and everyday pressures — and, for some, gambling is starting to feel like a way to escape, distract, or “get ahead”.

What we know is this:

Financial stress can increase vulnerability to problematic gambling, particularly when hope, relief, or control feel hard to find elsewhere.

Now more than ever, early conversations matter. So does reducing shame, increasing awareness, and reminding people that support exists — before gambling becomes another pressure on top of everything else.

If gambling is impacting you or someone you know, support is available: Far North Qld Cent, Central Qld 0498 000 325, Wide Bay and Burnett 07 4191 3100 (Mon to Fri, 8:30am to 4:30pm). Out of hours: 1800 858 858 (24/7).

Last week, Queensland's Minister for Housing, Sam O'Connor, visited our Bryant Place site on the Gold Coast to see firsthand the work our Gold Coast Homelessness Service team does in supporting people experiencing long term homelessness. It was a great opportunity to share the work happening here and the difference it makes to the people we support.

Queensland farmers are doing it tough right now.

Fuel and fertiliser shortages, rising costs, and the impact of recent severe weather events are piling pressure onto farming families and communities.

Farmer to Farmer is a free, confidential support line that connects farmers, farming families and others affected by life on the land with someone who understands the realities of farming life - a fellow farmer.

Available 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week on 1800 936 229.

If you are struggling, or know someone who is, don't go it alone. Reach out.
