Danger Sun Overhead (DSO) is an education program for outdoor industries, corporate work places schools and sporting clubs, to promote the prevention, awareness, early detection and support of skin cancers, including melanoma. DSO has provided sun safety education to over 82,000 workshop attendees to date across Australia. With awareness through education, prevention through product range and on-site skin checks, DSO has all bases covered to protect you from UV exposure and discovering skin cancers early. DSO has been officially recognised through the awarding of significant commendations for the valuable work we undertake to provide guidance to employers and industry leaders who seek to offer the best level of sun preventative care and working conditions to their workers.

What a wonderful opportunity to present the DSO session to the Mackay Regional Council Workplace Safety Expo.

With over 500 workers in attendance, we received amazing feedback and interest from those who attended our session and visited us at the DSO stall throughout the day.

Regional Councils have been wonderful supporters of promoting the sun safety message with Mackay one of 9 regional Councils we have been to recently who are spreading the important message around sun safety/ heat stress awareness and prevention.

Data highlights deadly rise !

This is the latest headline from the weekend papers reinforcing what we already know.

“Skin cancer rates have soared with non-melanoma detections 3 times more than all other cancers combines”.

The latest report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) confirmed that each year about half – a million Australians have at least one common non-melanoma skin cancer removed.

The article also confirmed the risk for outdoor workers and those living in regional and remote areas. This is why DSO specifically targets training for these workers.

DSO training is even more relevant and necessary than ever in combating a disease which is highly preventable with the right preventative measures and behaviours.

The CFMEU Youth Crew meetings are a great opportunity for DSO to get the message out to young workers about the importance of sun safety .

Young workers at this meeting at the Gold Coast talked about the importance of implementing the DSO “ S Factors” as soon as you can – particularly when you work in outdoor industries. Starting sun safety practises early on in your trade can save you a lot of potential damage and harm in the future.

Vale Professor Richard Scolyer AO

Along with many others in the community, DSO recognises and mourns the passing of melanoma scientist and former Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer who at the aged of 59 lost his fight on Sunday with incurable and aggressive stage four brain cancer.

Richard was a renowned pathologist and a world authority on skin cancer and melanoma diagnoses. His work has undoubtedly saved thousands of lives and transformed melanoma and skin cancer research and diagnosis across the globe.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In – a call for all Australians to commit to reconciliation wholeheartedly, every day, and take action to make change.

As this year’s National Reconciliation Week draws to a close DSO recommits to reconciliation and justice for First Nations’ People.
