Data highlights deadly rise !

This is the latest headline from the weekend papers reinforcing what we already know.

“Skin cancer rates have soared with non-melanoma detections 3 times more than all other cancers combines”.

The latest report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) confirmed that each year about half – a million Australians have at least one common non-melanoma skin cancer removed.

The article also confirmed the risk for outdoor workers and those living in regional and remote areas. This is why DSO specifically targets training for these workers.

DSO training is even more relevant and necessary than ever in combating a disease which is highly preventable with the right preventative measures and behaviours.

Please don’t be one of the ever-growing statistics confirmed in this most recent and alarming report – contact DSO to book your session today.

The CFMEU Youth Crew meetings are a great opportunity for DSO to get the message out to young workers about the importance of sun safety .

Young workers at this meeting at the Gold Coast talked about the importance of implementing the DSO “ S Factors” as soon as you can – particularly when you work in outdoor industries. Starting sun safety practises early on in your trade can save you a lot of potential damage and harm in the future.

DSO were so pleased to support the 2026 BERT | CiP Charity Golf Day.

This is always a highlight in the DSO calendar as we get to support a great event aimed at raising funds for charities in the Building Industry.

We provided complimentary sunscreen to all the golfers and took the opportunity to thank the industry that supports DSO and the important work we do.

At DSO we know how crucial it is to look after each other every day when it comes to sun safety and heat stress.

Looking after our mates is what we do – which is why we have been so pleased to support recent events such as the Mates in Energy Golf Day and the BTG Footy Day supporting Mates in Construction.

Vale Professor Richard Scolyer AO

Along with many others in the community, DSO recognises and mourns the passing of melanoma scientist and former Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer who at the aged of 59 lost his fight on Sunday with incurable and aggressive stage four brain cancer.

Richard was a renowned pathologist and a world authority on skin cancer and melanoma diagnoses. His work has undoubtedly saved thousands of lives and transformed melanoma and skin cancer research and diagnosis across the globe.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In – a call for all Australians to commit to reconciliation wholeheartedly, every day, and take action to make change.

As this year’s National Reconciliation Week draws to a close DSO recommits to reconciliation and justice for First Nations’ People.

We are so thrilled to also share our beautiful artwork which is proudly displayed in our DSO meeting room which was created by our wonderful friend – unionist and artist Lara Watson.

Keep a look out in the future for some amazing new DSO merchandise which will showcase this beautiful artwork designed specifically for DSO.

Delivering the DSO program to BERT/ CIRT members has always been a key focus of the work of DSO. We couldn’t do it without the active support of Delegates like Pat Bromley from Woodford Youth Detention Centre Besix Watpac, Dutchy from Hutchies Logan Reserve School and Shaun Patterson from the Cairns Hospital Hansen Yunken project. DSO also delivered training at the John Holland Cairns Water Security Stage 1 Project today where we trained over 100 workers.

These are just some of the amazing Delegates who continue to support the work of DSO keeping their workmates safe in high-risk outdoor industries where skin cancer rates are the highest.

May is globally recognised as Skin Cancer Awareness month which for DSO means we double down on our efforts to raise awareness about prevention, detection and sun safety.

We have been raising awareness this month at various events, including the Gold Coast, Moreton Bay region and Brisbane Labour Day events. We have been training across various Educational Institutions (including TAFE and PICAC campuses) and also working with the CFMEU , ETU and PPTEU Delegates to bring the BERT/CIRT sponsored workshops to a number of Building and Construction projects.

Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world but fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers. By sharing facts about the dangers of unprotected sun exposure and encouraging people to check their skin for warning signs, we can and will save lives.

But we can’t do this work alone.

So this Skin Cancer Awareness month make sure you contact DSO to book your workshop today!

DSO were in attendance at the Workers Memorial Day services held in Brisbane and the Gold Coast yesterday . They were both incredibly touching tributes arranged by the BTG Unions to recognise those workers and their families who have lost their lives on the job. We provided complimentary sunscreen at each of the events as our way to support the ongoing safety and education of workers.

We honour the hundreds of working people killed and injured on the job every year. Mourn for the dead. Fight for the living.
