Delivering the DSO program to BERT/ CIRT members has always been a key focus of the work of DSO. We couldn’t do it without the active support of Delegates like Pat Bromley from Woodford Youth Detention Centre Besix Watpac, Dutchy from Hutchies Logan Reserve School and Shaun Patterson from the Cairns Hospital Hansen Yunken project. DSO also delivered training at the John Holland Cairns Water Security Stage 1 Project today where we trained over 100 workers.

These are just some of the amazing Delegates who continue to support the work of DSO keeping their workmates safe in high-risk outdoor industries where skin cancer rates are the highest.

May is globally recognised as Skin Cancer Awareness month which for DSO means we double down on our efforts to raise awareness about prevention, detection and sun safety.

We have been raising awareness this month at various events, including the Gold Coast, Moreton Bay region and Brisbane Labour Day events. We have been training across various Educational Institutions (including TAFE and PICAC campuses) and also working with the CFMEU , ETU and PPTEU Delegates to bring the BERT/CIRT sponsored workshops to a number of Building and Construction projects.

Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world but fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers. By sharing facts about the dangers of unprotected sun exposure and encouraging people to check their skin for warning signs, we can and will save lives.

But we can’t do this work alone.

So this Skin Cancer Awareness month make sure you contact DSO to book your workshop today!

DSO were in attendance at the Workers Memorial Day services held in Brisbane and the Gold Coast yesterday . They were both incredibly touching tributes arranged by the BTG Unions to recognise those workers and their families who have lost their lives on the job. We provided complimentary sunscreen at each of the events as our way to support the ongoing safety and education of workers.

We honour the hundreds of working people killed and injured on the job every year. Mourn for the dead. Fight for the living.

ETU Delegates have been sensational in jumping in quickly in 2026 to secure DSO training across a number of sites.

The most recent being sessions delivered at QTMP in Torbanlea and the Cross River Rail project.

We really appreciate the efforts of ETU Delegates Jacob and Jason (Spud) in getting DSO in to train electricians on these big projects about the dangers of prolonged exposure to UVR and strategies to minimise the danger of skin cancer and heat stress.

Big shout out to the ETU and CIRT for their ongoing support of DSO in getting the sun safety message out across industry!

At DSO we know that training throughout the regions is crucial. Some of the highest rates of sun burn and skin cancer diagnosis occur throughout regional Queensland. Our facilitators have been delivering sessions at EQL and TAFE QLD throughout Cairns, Toowoomba, Mackay with more sessions planned next week in Townsville, Maryborough, Rockhampton and Torbanlea.

We finished off an enormous year of training with delivering our BERT/CIRT sponsored training to workers on the Delta Group South Brisbane job and ADCO Bond University in Robina. Thank you to Carl Mikkelsen and Paul Wright who are the legendary Delegates who made sure staff on theses sites received their DSO sun safety and heat stress training before the end of the year.

We already have booking requests coming through for early next year which means we will be hitting the ground running in 2026 so make sure you get in early to book your DSO session!

DSO knows how crucial workplace Delegates are in spreading the sun safety and heat stress message throughout the workplace and in their communities.

Thank you to the legendary ETU QLD Branch Generation Delegates for inviting DSO to present our session at their recent Conference.

Also a big shout out to CFMEU Site Delegates Matthew Bird and Mark Unnasch for arranging DSO to deliver BERT/CIRT sponsored training to their workplaces at the Eagle Street Pier John Holland site and the Hutchinson Builders – Murcia site.

We know that unfortunately Australia holds the unenviable title of the "Skin Cancer Capital of the World" due to its high rates of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.

But did you know that Queensland's skin cancer rates are significantly higher than the Australian national average, essentially making it the world's leader in skin cancer rates?

This is the reality for outdoor workers in Queensland, which is why DSO has been travelling extensively over the last 3 weeks to regional Queensland to ensure outdoor workers, apprentices and students who are the future generation in the Building and Construction industry, are well equipped to face another dangerous summer with skyrocketing temperatures and UV ratings.

Take proactive action everyday this summer by ensuring you follow the DSO “S Factors” Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek Shade, Slide, Stay hydrated and Skin Checks!
