Great Barrier Reef Foundation

Great Barrier Reef Foundation Because wonders should never cease. Our organisation is a space of cultural safety for all.

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is creating a future for the world’s coral reefs by restoring reefs and coastal habitats and helping them adapt to the impacts of climate change. We’ve built a collaborative organisation to raise funds, invest in innovative ideas and design real-world, scalable conservation programs that are delivering breakthroughs in marine and terrestrial restoration. Walking i

n step with First Nations people and front-line communities, the Foundation is fast-tracking and deploying solutions around the world.

El Niño conditions are here — potentially among the strongest on record.

While these conditions place additional pressure on coral reefs, they also reinforce the urgency and importance of the work underway to better understand coral resilience, protect vulnerable ecosystems and support the Great Barrier Reef’s recovery in a changing climate.

Can we help corals beat the heat? 🪸

When waters get too warm, coral loses the algae that feed it — causing it to bleach and leaving it vulnerable to starvation and disease.

We’re researching how coral, and the algae living inside it, respond to heat stress, helping unlock new ways to strengthen coral for a warming ocean.

This work is still evolving, but it marks an important step forward.

Did you know humpback mums whisper to their calves? 🐋

To avoid predators on their long journey north, baby humpbacks brush fins and murmur softly, too quiet for potential danger to hear.

This World Oceans Day, let’s celebrate progress. 🌊

We’re building a toolkit of practical solutions for the Reef, testing, refining and scaling new ways to repair and strengthen this extraordinary ecosystem.

Every breakthrough in Reef science, every seagrass meadow restored, every partnership formed and every conversation started is part of something bigger.

Together, these actions are helping create a more resilient future for the Great Barrier Reef.

Your donation helps deliver these solutions where they’re needed most, faster: https://give.barrierreef.org/2CF8AF

Seagrass meadows are the lungs of the Reef. 🌱

These vast underwater habitats feed turtles and dugongs, shelter thousands of fish species and help keep the Reef healthy. They also capture and store carbon up to 50 times more efficiently than tropical rainforests.

That’s why we’re building practical tools to restore seagrass at scale, including underwater robotics designed to plant seagrass seeds with precision.

For coral reefs, “It’s not game over. It’s game on.”

When Theresa Fyffe shared the Reef’s story on the TED stage, she brought a message of hope to a global audience. It wasn't just about the challenges coral reefs face but the science and the collaboration working to protect their future.

One year on from the talk launching online, we’re still incredibly proud to see Theresa's message resonate around the world.

Today only, your donation to Repair a Reef will be DOUBLED!

That means every dollar you give can have DOUBLE the impact for the Great Barrier Reef.

New restoration solutions are being trialled across the Reef but urgent support is needed to scale this work faster.

If you’ve ever thought about giving to the Reef, this is the moment.
Double your impact today only.

This National Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge the enduring connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples hold with land and sea Country.

Traditional Owners are leading the largest co-designed Reef protection effort in history:
💧 Improving water quality
🌊 Managing crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks
🌿 Restoring coastal wetlands
🪸 Advancing culturally grounded monitoring and climate adaptation

The true impact goes beyond data. It’s about empowerment, recognition, and healing Country.

Introducing Coral Sea, ✈️ a striking tribute to one of the world’s most extraordinary ecosystems.

This beautiful Reef livery recognises and celebrates 10 years of partnership with Qantas and we’re grateful for the ongoing support of the people and projects working to restore and protect coral reefs for future generations.

We hope Coral Sea inspires people to not just visit the Reef but to care about its future.

As the Reef faces growing challenges, one source of knowledge has endured for millennia.

This National Week, we recognise the enduring connection Traditional Owners have to Sea Country and the vital role First Nations knowledge plays in caring for the Great Barrier Reef.

By bringing together Traditional knowledge and modern-day methods, Traditional Owners are helping strengthen the resilience of Reef ecosystems while ensuring cultural knowledge continues to be shared with future generations.
