South East Queenslanders, you really made the region blossom with our recent free native seeds giveaway – with Buderim taking top spot as the leading suburb for native daisies planted! 🌸

In SEQ we are so lucky to have such diverse flora and fauna and by planting native seeds, residents are helping to protect and strengthen our natural environment. 🐝

Thank you to everyone who has helped grow the next chapter of our region’s story and made their mark on our environment’s legacy.

Over 5 million feathered friends have been spotted in Australian backyards, schools, local parks and outdoor spaces for the 2025 Aussie Bird Count! 🦜

The iconic Australian Magpie has taken first place overall, and the cheeky Rainbow Lorikeet is Queensland’s most spotted bird for 2025!

BirdLife Australia hosts the nationwide Count every year to take a crucial snapshot of the birds we see in our communities, as they tell incredible stories about the wellbeing of our environment. 🌿

The Count will be back in October this year, and you can visit BirdLife Australia’s website for all the information you need to take part: https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/

A reminder that healthy waterways support more than what’s happening in the water 🐨🌿

This koala was spotted near one of Healthy Land & Water’s revegetation and bank stabilisation sites along the Caboolture River, where thousands of native plants are helping restore habitat and food sources for local wildlife.

Healthy waterways support healthy ecosystems, both in and out of the water. The proof is in the trees! 🌳

Healthy Land & Water recently hosted RACQ for a volunteer planting day in Mulgowie 🌱

Across three days, volunteers helped plant 1,500 trees to extend koala habitat and improve flood resilience in the landscape. Set on a floodplain, this site was carefully selected as lower-productivity farmland to help slow water flow, reduce downstream flooding into Laidley Creek, and extend existing koala habitat from previous restoration works.

All species planted were suited to the environment including key koala food trees.

On the day, volunteers learned about:
✅ How to plant a tree.
✅ Soil health and why it matters.
✅ The realities of bush regeneration.
✅ Building more resilient landscapes.

A big thank you to Mulgowie Farming Company for generously providing land for this project. A long-term partner to Healthy Land & Water, they’ve been supporting sustainable land management in the Lockyer Valley for over 70 years.

RACQ volunteers support projects like this to deliver real, on-ground environmental outcomes – improving flood resilience, restoring habitat, and engaging their people in meaningful climate action.

DIY Gully Erosion Control for Landholders field day.

Healthy Land & Water is hosting a free field day exploring practical solutions for stabilising small gullies and reducing land degradation.

This hands-on session offers the chance to see erosion control methods in action, with on-site inspections of two different chute construction techniques designed to stabilise gullies and reduce ongoing land degradation.

Ideal for landholders looking to protect soil and productivity 🌾

✅ Side-by-side comparison of chute designs
✅ Real-world insights and lessons learned
✅ Practical tips for planning and building your own solutions

Does this site look familiar? As part of the Seqwater-funded North Pine Source Water Protection Program, we shared this site a few months ago, and now the next chapter is here! 🌿

Back then, with support from Seqwater we stabilised 150 m of badly eroded streambank in Mt Pleasant. Works included installing pile fields to add roughness to the channel while vegetation establishes, and putting in stock-exclusion fencing.

The site has now been planted with a mix of native trees, shrubs and grasses – a carefully selected combination of three types of plant species doing two important jobs:

🌱 Multiple layers of plant species playing a specific, functional role in the environment.

🌿 Native plant composition of pre-clearing Regional Ecosystems (REs), improving resilience by using plants naturally adapted to local hydrology and soils.

Why native vegetation? It offers the greatest long-term protection against erosion and increases resilience to weather events. The plants, alongside the pile fields already in place, form a layered defence against erosion:

→ Root systems hold the soil together underground.
→ Above-ground vegetation slows floodwater velocity at the surface.
→ Less erosion = less sediment entering the North Pine River = cleaner source water for South East Queensland.

The planting will be maintained for several years as it establishes, with the goal of becoming a self-sustaining system that protects our waterways long into the future. A win for water quality, and a genuine contribution to local biodiversity. 💧

Queensland's protected areas stand as sanctuaries of serenity and havens for our precious wildlife and play a vital role in safeguarding our amazing biodiversity and cultural values for generations to come – and this status comes with the goal of long-term security and safety.

Our national parks and other safe havens are home to crucial ecosystems that keep us alive and healthy – we’re talking clean air and water, habitats for native wildlife, and the chance for us to reconnect with the natural world. Keeping these areas protected is a way to respect the legacy of care that has come for centuries before us.

Fish migration is deeply connected to the health of our rivers, waterways and communities 🐟

This World Fish Migration Day, the theme “We Are River People” recognises the connection between people, healthy rivers and the species that rely on them.

Across South East Queensland, fish move through rivers, estuaries and wetlands to feed, breed and complete important stages of their life cycle. These journeys depend on healthy, connected waterways from catchments through to the coast.

For thousands of years, the Turrbal people and Yuggera People have maintained deep connections to the Brisbane River and the waterways that shape the region today.

Rivers continue to connect communities to place. They support biodiversity, provide spaces for recreation and culture, and sustain the landscapes that flow through SEQ.

At Healthy Land & Water, projects across the region support healthier waterways through catchment restoration, erosion management, water quality improvement and habitat protection.

This work helps strengthen the health and resilience of the river systems that communities and ecosystems rely on every day.
