Where are all the cable car haters who lied about wanting the mountain to be free?

The Wellington Park Management Trust is considering charging visitors to drive up kunanyi/Mount Wellington under a new funding model that could raise up to $8.6 million a year.

Consultants have recommended vehicle access fees, an optional shuttle and commercial licences for the park, which draws 583,000 visitors annually while relying largely on Hobart and Glenorchy council funding.

Trust general manager Amy Russell said the current model was “not sustainable”, with revenue needed for safety, amenities, traffic, toilets, boardwalks and signage.

Walkers, runners and cyclists would keep free access, but any vehicle fee must apply equally to Tasmanians and interstate visitors. The trust awaits the state government’s Our Mountains Future review before finalising its position.

I’ve been reporting this for a while… The Council wants to close the Pinnacle road and shuffle people on to buses at *someones* cost AND the Wellington Trust wants to instead make the road a TOLLWAY.

A tourism consultancy firm has recommended that visitors to Hobart's Kunanyi/Mt Wellington be charged for access — likely to result in a "deliberate and positive outcome" of fewer people going.

A cable car MUST be considered as part of transport and facilities on the Mountain.

Things have to change!

There are urgent calls for one Australian state to fix a stark decline before it’s too late.

The Council has had a generation to work on solutions, yet issuing parking tickets is all it can offer? 🤦

You may not be aware, but the Council, amongst many of its anti cable car political stunts, said it didn’t support a cableway to the pinnacle because its focus was at the Springs.

So what has the Council delivered in 30 years? A few line markings? A shiny barrier (in parts) delivered with State Government Covid money? A constant barrage of highly paid consultant reports and pretty marketing images?

The Council’s treatment of the Mountain has been an ongoing pantomime.

Drivers who park illegally on Kunanyi / Mount Wellington during busy periods will now face fines as the City of Hobart ramps up enforcement to keep emergency access clear.

The council said dangerous congestion, especially after snow, has seen cars left on yellow lines, in no-standing zones and in spots that narrow mountain roads.

Hobart Transport Committee Chair Ryan Posselt said fines would only be issued when congestion reached critical levels and public safety was at risk.

Police, Ambulance Tasmania and Wellington Park Management Trust urged visitors to plan ahead, check conditions and use designated parking areas.
