Vale Peter Dunbabin — Peter D
ONE FM is deeply saddened by the passing of Peter William Dunbabin — known to so many of us, and to so many of our listeners, simply as Peter D.
Peter was part of the ONE FM family for the best part of a decade, and family really is the right word. He was one of us. He gave his time, his voice, his humour, his kindness and his heart — not just to this station, but to the whole Shepparton community he loved so much.
Everyone who worked alongside Peter will remember the same things: how generous he was, how fair, how kind, and how he always had time to stop and listen. He looked after people. He helped quietly, never wanting any fuss, never wanting thanks — just glad to lend a hand to whoever needed one.
He was also one of the hardest working people any of us have known. Peter would come in early to present the breakfast program, then head straight off to run a full day at Focus Cards and Gifts in the Maude Street Mall. If Dave Taylor was away on a Saturday morning, Peter would step in and do breakfast again. And if the station needed someone on a Sunday night, there was every chance Peter would roll in once more, sit behind the microphone, and fill the late hours with country music for everyone listening at home.
That was Peter. There was nothing he wouldn't do to help, a real genuine rare human.
Nothing showed his heart more than what he did every Christmas Day. No matter which day of the week it fell on, Peter would insist on coming into the station to present a special six-hour Christmas program, so the rest of us could spend that day with our families. He gave up his own Christmas, year after year, so others could have theirs.
He did it quietly. He did it gladly. He did it because he loved this station and more than anything, he loved this community, that was simply who he was.
Peter believed in community radio with his whole heart. He championed ONE FM wherever he went, and he was proud of Shepparton — proud of its local businesses, and proud of the people who make this region the warm and close-knit place it is.
Through his years in local media and business, his work at Focus Cards and Gifts, serving voluntarily on various committees and everything he gave to ONE FM, Peter became part of the very fabric of this town. He didn't just belong to the community.
For our station, Peter was so much more than a presenter. He was a friend, a colleague, a mentor, a supporter, and a much-loved part of the ONE FM family.
Peter — on behalf of every one of us who had the honour of knowing you and working beside you: thank you.
Thank you for your warmth, your generosity, and the joy you brought into this community through the life you lived and the time you gave so freely. You were loved here, more than you probably ever knew.
Your voice will be remembered and we are all very greatful having heard it "Live and Local" on ONE FM.
Our thoughts and our love are with Roz, with Peter's family, his friends, his former colleagues, his customers, his listeners, and everyone whose life was made brighter by knowing him.
Vale Peter D.
Rest peacefully
