💗💙 LIP TAPING & CLEFT LIP 💙💗

You may have heard of lip taping as part of the early cleft journey but what exactly is it?

In some babies with a cleft lip, gentle adhesive tape may be used to bring the sides of the cleft closer together and support the tissues before lip repair.

✨ It may help:
• Gently reduce the width of the cleft
• Bring the lip and surrounding tissues into a more favourable position
• Prepare the tissues for surgery in some cases
• Support the overall cleft treatment journey

Lip taping is not a cure and it doesn’t replace surgery. Every cleft is different, so it isn’t suitable or recommended in the same way for every baby.

👩‍⚕️ Most importantly: lip taping should be taught and guided by your baby’s cleft team. Parents and carers can be trained in how to apply it safely at home.

And remember there is no “perfect” way to navigate a cleft journey. You’re learning, adapting and doing your best for your little one. 💗

💗💙 Did you know there are different types of clefts?

Clefts can affect the lip, the palate (roof of the mouth), or both and no two cleft journeys are exactly the same.

Some of the different types include:

💗 Unilateral cleft lip — affecting one side of the upper lip
💗 Bilateral cleft lip — affecting both sides of the upper lip
💗 Median cleft lip — affecting the middle of the upper lip
💙 Soft palate cleft — affecting the soft palate at the back of the mouth
💙 Hard palate cleft — affecting the hard palate
💗💙 Hard & soft palate cleft — affecting both parts of the palate

A child may have a cleft lip, a cleft palate, or a combination of both. Clefts can vary in size and appearance, and each child may have different needs throughout their journey.

Most importantly every child is different. ❤️

A cleft diagnosis can come with lots of questions, but with the right care, support and a strong community, children with clefts can thrive, grow and achieve their dreams. 💗💙

💗💙 Understanding Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate

A cleft lip and/or palate occurs when parts of a baby’s face and mouth don’t completely join together during early pregnancy.

Clefts can affect the lip, gum, hard palate and/or soft palate, and can be unilateral (one side) or bilateral (both sides). Around 1 in 600–700 babies in Australia are born with a cleft.

The exact cause isn’t always known. A combination of genetic and environmental factors may play a role — but most importantly:

It is NOT your fault. 💫🩷

A cleft journey can involve surgeries, feeding support, speech therapy, hearing care, dental treatment and orthodontics. Every child is different, and their treatment is tailored to their individual needs.

And you don’t have to navigate it alone. 💗
