The Nursery Manager thought we should show off our gorgeous, newly germinated seedlings. The ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ž๐ค๐ข๐ง ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฆ (๐‘ท๐’๐’†๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ๐’š๐’๐’Š๐’–๐’Ž ๐’•๐’Š๐’Ž๐’๐’“๐’†๐’๐’”๐’†) fruits used for propagation were collected from the ground, underneath a tree and had no remaining flesh. It was decided to position the propagated seed where they would receive greater direct sunlight, which was not in the propagation shadehouse where we would normally place them. We werenโ€™t sure whether the cooler winter temperatures would hinder their germination, however it is July, and with much excitement they have germinated! We also have plenty of tubestock ready to plant if you're interested in growing some yourself.

The purple fruits of Burdekin Plums are edible, have red or white flesh (white flesh is more palatable) and can be created into jam or wine. Take a look at page two of the April 2024 newsletter for a recipe.

A medium, densely canopied tree to 20 metres, which is briefly deciduous in the dry season. Grows naturally in Dry Rainforest and Coastal Rainforest. The dark green, glossy leaves are pinnate, with 5-11 leaflets. The terminal leaflet is larger than the other leaflets. Flowers are yellowish-green and small. Separate male and female flowers, which occur during Summer. Fruits are large (to 5cm in diameter), round and slightly depressed. Skin is purple, flesh is plum-like, and the seed case is a large stone containing a number seeds (resembles a flying saucer).

Instead of holding a planting event elsewhere, we have decided to celebrate the completion of revegetation of Galbraith Creek and Beames Creek adjacent to Galbraith Park, and the 13 years of NTD plantings that have occurred there.

In fact, starting in 2008 Landcare has conducted community and/or Landcare volunteer plantings every year, except 2020 due to Covid. 18 years of volunteer effort to revegetate these creeks, control w**ds in the plantings, water the plantings, right flattened plantings after Cyclone Ului, Cyclone Debbie, Cyclone Koji and numerous flood events, and visiting establishing sections to plant an understorey. We think this is worth celebrating.

And ... We are open again this weekend - SATURDAY 18 JULY, 9 TO 12.

Plenty of well priced local native plants to choose from, and knowledgeable volunteers on hand to answer your native garden or revegetation questions.

Our local Cassia has beautiful flowing flowers, soft green leaves, striking reddish flaking bark and is mostly evergreen. So much nicer than the introduced variety that can become w**dy.

During June, our hard-working Landcare volunteers returned to the nursery with copious amounts of ๐‘ช๐’๐’๐’–๐’ƒ๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’‚ seeds from Nelly Bay. These seeds will be ideal for germinating for upcoming coastal revegetation in the Whitsundays region. This evergreen shrub is fast growing and can tolerate the harsh conditions of the beach scrub environment. Great if you reside on the beach and wish to add a hardy native shrub to your collection, otherwise keep an eye out for them next time youโ€™re enjoying a walk through the Beach Scrub.

Short, evergreen climbing shrub up to 2 metres height. Grows naturally on the beach front, beach forest, coastal woodland and coastal vine thickets. Leaves are glossy and heart-shaped, with a serrated edge, prominent veins and pointed tip. Flowers are small, creamy-green, which form in clusters in the leaf axils. Fruits are brown, globular, segmented capsules containing three dark-grey seeds.
