Herbaceous trailing plant, which occasionally grows up to 1 metre in height and 2 metres in diameter, however most are smaller. The plant becomes dormant during the dry season with an underground tuber. Grows naturally in open woodlands or grasslands, often on rocky hillsides. The rough, hairy leaves have serrated edges and are 3-5 lobed or heart-shaped. Flowers are hibiscus-like, that are a watermelon pink colour with a dark centre. Fruits are capsules containing kidney-shaped seeds. The capsules are tough, papery, hairy and 5-lobed.

Fast growing, large shrub to 5 metres height, with long, ribbed stems. Grows in open forests and woodlands, along creek lines, and in disturbed areas, such as roadsides. The broad leaves are covered in white hairs, which make the leaves feel soft and give the grey-green colour. The veins are longitudinal and parallel, 3-4 of which are more prominent. Flowers in Autumn to Spring. The yellow flowers are a thin spike, up to 4cm in length, that emerge from the axil of the stem. Fruits are tightly coiled, dark-brown pods, which tangle together.

Nelly Bay at Dingo Beach is one of our volunteer Landcarers favourite areas, which we continue to have a long-lasting relationship with. They often return here for a morning of w**d removal and seed collecting. This maintenance work allows us to prepare for the next planting project, with the aim being to restore as much of this beautiful and critically endangered ecological community that is the Littoral Rainforest.

The Fabulous Nicole, our much treasured WCL Community Nursery Manager, has taken a well deserved mini-break this week, but not before capturing a happy photo of some of her industrious crew of incredibly dedicated Volunteers!!! Some of whom sometimes prefer to take a back seat and fade into the background!!!

Last Thursday morning they were working together to pot-up germinated seedlings, which are carefully planted into tubes. They then begin the process of โ€˜hardening upโ€™ on the various benches, so that they will eventually be robust enough to find new homes and continue to thrive โ€˜out in the wildโ€™! ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒณ

Thank you everyone for your ongoing support and we hope to see you down at the Nursery either this Saturday morning between 9am and 12 midday, or on one of our weekly Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Feel free to come along to browse through our tubestock, ask any questions you may have and maybe even treat yourself to a few new plants. ๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Without our volunteers we'd be quite lost and appreciate each and everyone of them, and everything they contribute. This week our Nursery manager has selected one in particular for a special mention - It's Anika!

Weโ€™re making special mention of Anika, as she finds the motivation to volunteer with us at the Whitsunday Catchment Landcare Community Nursery, even with a full-time job. As a member for nine months, Anika always arrives with a vibrant smile, and friendly manner. Anika decided to volunteer with us so that she was involved in our great community and to receive hands on work in gardening. Sheโ€™s learnt a lot; favours potting up seedlings and enjoys the social aspect.

We always welcome new volunteers and appreciate all of our existing volunteers. A big THANK YOU to you all! ๐Ÿค— and wishing everyone a Safe and Happy Easter!

Timber cutters referred to them as Canary Wood, as the timber is bright yellow, but they didn't like them much as the fine sawdust was a skin irritant. We have a grand old one at the Nursery, and one planted by local school kids in 2016 that is now about 10 metres tall.

Near the end of the cricket nets at Galbraith Park is a fine example of a heritage tree. Soon after the revegetation surrounding had been established a few years ago, providing something of a hide, local kids discovered the grand old Nauclea as a site to build their tree house. Once mature, these are tough trees, surviving cyclones and flooding, so not too bothered by some incidental bark damage as occurred as it developed from great-to-climb, to something of a Magic Faraway Tree setting.

Perhaps those kids are now doing Engineering or Biology.

It is a good time to plant a Nauclea as they don't mind having wet feet for a bit. After a few years their semi-deciduous habit makes them useful to plant where some late winter light is welcome, and they have a magnificent display of globular white flowers that look like nature's Christmas tree decoration. Time of flowering can vary, and will double set some years, but December is most likely. The aroma is pleasant and sweet.

It's also a good time to plant them as a gift to a future generation of tree-house fanciers - a legacy tree if you like. As we say, the best time to plant a tree was thirty years ago, and the second-best time is today. For your investment of $3.50 on a Nauclea, you/someone will have a hell of a lot of tree!

Large tree, up to 30 metres high. Straight trunk with horizontal branching. Deciduous in late winter or early spring. Grows in lowland rainforests, along streams and swampy areas. Leaves are very large, glossy, egg-shaped with conspicuous veins. Flowers form in a spherical cluster, the size of a ping pong ball. The small, fragrant flowers have yellow petals and a prominent white style. Fruits are globular, yellow/brown, soft, and fleshy, containing numerous tiny seeds.

This rainforest species is a bird attracting shrub and is presently in an abundance of fruit. It is easy to grow, as it will grow in most soil types and will tolerate heavy pruning, and furthermore, L. novoguineensis also works well as an infill plant for revegetation projects. It can reportedly be seen along the Wompoo Way walk in Conway National Park.

Grows in rainforest and as understorey.
Leaflets are lance-shaped with a serrated edge and conspicuous veins. There is pink colouration in new leaflets and in the mid-vein of leaflets. The leaflet upper side is smooth to touch.
Flowers are white, small sized and tube shaped, which form in clusters. Fruit shape is like a depressed sphere. Unripened fruits are green to red in colour and ripened fruits are deep purple. The clusters of fruits are fleshy containing approximately six seeds.

It grows on the beachfront and produces beautiful, bright-orange, trumpet-shaped flowers. Although this bushy shrub/tree can grow inland of coastal areas, it thrives in areas that are closer to the sea. Greater details of the Sea Trumpet are found in our membersโ€™ monthly WCL newsletter for February 2026.
