Knowing how to safely put someone into recovery position is a critical skill to have when faced with an emergency. It ensures that an unconscious person can keep breathing while protecting their spine.

Stephen is the 2026 Interchange WA Employee of the Year!

The reason why is simple: he takes the time to understand his customers and uses what he learns as a springboard to build them up.

From cooking to shopping and finding employment, Stephen is an advocate who gives his customers the choice and control to direct their lives. Once they choose to take the step forward or make a change, he gives them the tools, structure and support to attain their goals.

Time and again, Stephen has been highly successful in creating positive change in the lives of his customers, and it’s this track record that won him the prestigious award of Employee of the Year.

Interchange WA was founded on June 11th, 1991. Today, we celebrate 35 years.

A lot has changed in that time, but our commitment to helping People with Disability live good lives has remained the same.

Interchange WA was founded by a group of parents in Fremantle for their children. They believed that a relationship-based approach to disability support would create positive change. They imagined a world where their children would integrate into their neighbourhoods, form friendships, live with freedom and dignity, and most importantly, belong. Those are the principles that we continue to serve our communities with to this day.

In the first year, we started with 30 young people in one Neighbourhood. Since then, we’ve grown to hundreds of customers in nine Neighbourhoods across Perth, Peel and Albany.

Our founders, employees, and customers are all peas in a pod when it comes to living the values of Interchange WA.

Sophie moved into a SIL home with Interchange WA earlier this year, and she’s been having a ball. Cooking, gardening, and dancing are all parts of the daily routine.

She’s taken a shine to cooking since joining us. Aided by adaptations to her kitchen such as an accessible cutting board, she's been able to contribute to cooking her own meals like never before.

There are plenty of cupcakes to go around, so she’s looking for a new housemate to share the fun and independence of SIL. If you’re looking for Supported Independent Living in an SDA home, reach out to Interchange WA and we can find you a place where you can thrive.

Is your provider first aid trained?
It’s training day at Interchange WA.

Here’s our team of Support Workers practicing their chest compressions to a disco beat to make sure their dummies are “stayin alive”.

It’s part of our commitment to empowering our Support Workers. Our trainers have been visiting each team across our Perth and Peel offices, giving hands-on training in a variety of essential first aid skills including CPR, defibrillation, bandaging, and more.

These skills can make all the difference in an emergency, which is why we don’t leave the health safety of our people to chance, and neither should you.

Layla is the winner of the 2026 Interchange WA Award for Excellence in Service. The amount of kindness, respect, and openness to learning she has displayed is exceptional. The way she picks up information and applies it has made a substantial positive difference on her customers’ lives and made her more than deserving of the award.

When given the opportunity to support a nonverbal customer, Layla took up the challenge to learn their personal system of sign and body language to communicate. Soon enough, Layla was able to seamlessly communicate with the customer, helping them feel supported and understood at all times throughout their supports.

Global Day of Parents is here to remind us to appreciate the contributions and sacrifices they make to raise their children and support their families. That includes parents who are carers for their children with disability, as well as parents with disability.

So, whoever you are, take a moment to spare a thought (or a phone call) for your parents or children to keep nurturing the lifelong connection between you.
