DSWA is grateful to all members of the Down Syndrome Australia consortium for their work and advocacy to impact the content of the bill. Some of the last minute changes represent the strong advocacy by a multitude of agencies to lobby for changes.

For our community; Through DSA and other platforms, we will continue to share what we know. There is still a lot of uncertainty and unknowns at this time. During this uncertain period I want to ensure that our community knows we are here to provide support, a listening ear, direct advocacy. We are also responding to feedback and looking at how our current programs might offer additional support to our community.

We remain concerned about the impact of the Bill but recognise that a number of last-minute amendments respond to our significant advocacy efforts.

These include:
โœ… Improvements to the definitions and application of parental responsibility.
โœ… The application of unscheduled plan reassessments.
โœ… Safeguarding of people who require 24/7 supports.

The DSA Consortium will continue to work with the Government on the safe implementation of this Bill.

We know many in our community are anxious about what comes next. We will keep you updated as we work through what this means.
