CoMHWA has heard about an opportunity for people who have received diagnoses of bipolar to be involved in a forthcoming episode of You Can’t Ask That.

You Can’t Ask That is an interview series that looks at marginalized, misunderstood or stigmatized groups, and features self-identifying members of those groups sharing their experiences and personal stories and addressing misunderstandings or assumptions by answering controversial or taboo questions from the public.

There are opportunities to take part in short interviews informing research into the lived experience of those who have received bipolar diagnoses, and these do not necessarily involve being filmed and appearing on the show.

However, there are also opportunities to appear on the show and share your lived experience on camera. Participation is a voluntary (unpaid).

If you would like to speak with us for more information or details, or if you would like for us to connect you with the show’s production team, please email [email protected]

While CoMHWA is not involved with the show, we can offer peer support and connection to resources on telling your story safely for any of our members or WA consumers who are interested in taking part.

Alternatively, you can reach out directly to the show – please see their call for participants and information below:

ABC TV's interview series You Can’t Ask That is back in production. We are currently researching an episode that will feature people living with bipolar disorder, including a range of distinct perspectives from around the country. We're hoping to learn more about people's personal stories and lived experience of bipolar disorder – if you are comfortable sharing your experience, please email your name, location and phone number to Isabel on [email protected].

New Submission: Inquiry into the Guardianship and Administration System in WA

CoMHWA has provided a submission to the Inquiry into the Guardianship and Administration System in WA, calling for reforms that better protect the rights, autonomy and dignity of mental health consumers.

Our submission highlights that mental health consumers are disproportionately represented on Guardianship and Administration orders in WA and that current approaches often rely on substituted decision-making rather than supporting people to make decisions for themselves.

We also highlight the need for culturally safe, Aboriginal-led approaches that uphold self-determination, culture and human rights.

Consumers told us that guardianship can have a profound impact on autonomy, self-worth and the ability to pursue a meaningful life.

Our recommendations include:
• Supported decision-making
• Adequate resourcing and funding
• Culturally safe practices
• Independent advocacy access
• Stronger accountability and oversight
• Lived experience leadership

National Reconciliation Week 2026 runs from 27 May - 3 June, with this year’s theme calling on all of us to be All In for reconciliation.

At CoMHWA, we know reconciliation is not symbolic work. It asks us to listen deeply, reflect honestly, and stay willing to learn, challenge ourselves, and take action toward justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

As a lived experience organisation, we also recognise the importance of truth-telling, self-determination, community connection, and creating spaces where people feel safe, heard, and respected.

National Reconciliation Week marks two significant moments in Australia’s history: the 1967 Referendum and the Mabo decision. These dates remind us of the strength of collective action, and that reconciliation is ongoing work that belongs to, and rests on all of us.
