What an incredible night of entertainment, laughs, wit, and fierce competition at the Rostrum Club 15 Tall Story and Comedy Debate! 🎤✨

Last night the Claremont Hotel was filled with energy as our talented storytellers and debaters took to the stage. From Golf courses to thrones, death to Crossing the Nullarbor, being a Ten Pound Pom, a town that stole a Pub or WA Royalty, the tall stories had it all. The debate was then non-stop entertainment as both sides clowned around with plenty of banter or points of information thrown in for good measure.

A massive congratulations to all of our speakers who had a go and a big thank you to those who came along to support and cast their ballots to decide the winners. 🎉

Congratulations to Club 22's Jeff Lane who took home the Tall Story win and to Club 34 who won and convinced us that Clowns are not just fundamentally for adults only.

Want to improve faster as a speaker? Start here! Our Coaches Training Workshop is coming soon! 🧑‍🏫

Whether you've been a Rostrum member for six months or six years, there's one thing we all have in common — we never stop growing as speakers.

That's why we're excited to invite you to a FREE Rostrum Coaches Workshop across two Saturdays in May — and before you say, "but I don't want to be a coach," read on, because this one is for everyone.

Here's the insight that experienced speakers already know: understanding the principles of coaching is one of the most powerful ways to accelerate your own public speaking development. When you understand what great speaking looks like from the coach's perspective, you see your own performance through a completely different lens.

✍️Day 1 - For trainee & existing coaches, Presidents & Program Directors
This workshop is designed for:
-Members who want to become accredited Rostrum coaches
-Existing coaches keen to refresh and deepen their skills
-Speakers at any stage who want a serious boost to their development

✍️Day 2 - For trainee & existing coaches
This workshop is about how to Coach - Advanced techniques

Where: Stirling Business Centre, 45 Delawney St, Balcatta.
(Plenty of parking available. Morning tea and lunch provided.)
Cost: FREE for financial Rostrum members only
Register: Use the link https://rostrumclubsofwa.wildapricot.org/event-6618214 or email your name, club number and your contact details to [email protected] with "Register Me" in the subject line.

On the evening of the AGSOY Final, we also had the impromptu competition. Eight courageous speakers had three minutes to prepare and then present a three-minute speech. The audience voted, and the winner, Gerry Derksen, received $100 for his amusing speech on having not only the "courage to be different" when buying a Harley-Davidson, but also for the colourful story of how he managed to get his motorbike home. 🏍

It's not too late to register for our second WTBI event

We have nine speakers ready to share their Big Ideas with our wider community.

Unlike many other Rostrum events, this is not a speaking competition. It’s an opportunity for those who have put their names forward to present an idea of their own choice with a fresh perspective and bold ideas. It can be as crazy or lofty as their minds allow.

It’s also a unique opportunity for members to present in a larger venue, with access to technology, and in front of a large crowd.

This is where YOU come in… (yes, I’m talking to you…)

Come along and support our speakers, some are at the beginning of their Public Speaking careers, and others are more experienced, but all are on a journey to becoming better presenters.

Who: Showcasing Rostrum’s most exceptional presenters

Where: State Library WA, State Library Theatre 25 Francis St, Perth

Do you have a Big Idea that could change the world?

Or a compelling story that you want to shout from the rooftops?
How about a demonstration of some useful skill or some cool technology?
And finally, do you want to share it with a curious and passionate audience?
If you’ve ever had a vision of yourself on stage sharing your Big Idea, well now’s your chance.

This is NOT a competition. It’s an event where Rostrum members come together to showcase their talent in a supportive environment and at a first-class venue.

Held for the first time in 2024, this Rostrum event will showcase our most exceptional presenters and speakers. It’s intended to push your public speaking to the next level. Wouldn’t that look good on your CV?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

Deliver a captivating presentation via storytelling, a vision, or a performance
Incorporate a short video, slides, sound, lighting, and performance to support your presentation
Demonstrate preparedness by ensuring that all technology, demonstrations, and performance work seamlessly

Tips to Prepare:
* Watch some TED YouTube videos to help you plan your presentation
* Practise at your club and embrace the feedback

Do your meetings look like this? They can have more direction.

Learn how to make more sense of meeting procedures so you achieve better meeting outcomes.

If you feel like your meetings have a mind of their own and lack direction and you'd like to get them back on track, then this workshop is for you.

Formal meeting procedures are designed to ensure meetings have more focus, with the outcome being ....drumroll.... more and better decisions.

Meeting procedure can be like another language for some people but it doesn't have to be.

Next Thursday 30th, we're holding our first workshop for 2025 called Meeting Procedures Made Easy. This is exactly what you'll learn:- how to demystify meeting procedures and how to make sense of it all.

Why would you use meeting procedure you may ask? Isn't it old fashioned and out of date? The answer is a resounding NO.

Local government use meeting procedures at every meeting. So do lots of union meetings. Community groups try to use it, but often they end up being confused.

This workshop will be interactive. You'll see when, where and how to use formal procedures. But more importantly it will show you how an understanding of meeting procedure can make every meeting you attend more effective.

There's a way to run a meeting effectively and efficiently without the vocabulary of formal meeting procedure, but with great results. This workshop will show you how.

When: Thursday, January 30th, 6:15 - 8:15pm

Where: Club 34 - Cambridge Centre, corner of The Boulevard and Howtree Place, Floreat (under the Cambridge Library)

Cost: $5 cash

The workshop will be fast moving, fun and full of learning for every type of meeting you attend. We look forward to seeing you there!

Introducing (Dr) Saalik Khan- 18 years - Rostrum member profile

Saalik has aspired to be a doctor for many years. Both his mother and father are doctors. You could say it’s in his blood.

In December 2023, imagine his devastation when he failed to receive an offer at university to study medicine as he did not pass the oral interview. In other words, his marks impressed, but his speaking ability did not. What was he to do?

He wasn’t about to give up on his dream, so he took a gap year to improve himself. The first thing he did was join Rostrum. He became Club 34’s youngest member at 18. Our oldest and most experienced member is 80, and we have members of all ages in between. There’s a great depth of speaking and life knowledge for all members to learn from at every Rostrum Club.

In March 2024, Saalik joined Club 34. He listened, learnt and embraced what to do to be a more effective speaker. He learned to frame what he wanted to say, how and when to pause to suit the situation, and how to stand and communicate confidently. Saalik inspired us with technical speeches on changing a tyre and how viruses work.

A month before his 2024 interviews with universities, the club rostered an ‘interview panel” speaking exercise where three experienced members asked Saalik questions that he would get in a similar situation. He also practised at home with his parents. He put in the work.

In December 2024, Saalik announced to the club….. “I confirm that I have received an offer from the University of Western Australia to study medicine starting next year. Thank you all for your perpetual support. I couldn’t have done it without you all.”

Well done, Saalik, Club 34 is very proud of you.

If you know anyone of any age who could benefit from improving their speaking skills (to help their career and life and make some friends too), invite them along as a visitor to a Rostrum meeting. It could be the best decision they ever make.
