You may have noticed we’ve gone a little quiet when it comes to awards and recognition. 💗

The truth is, our focus has been on our clients. Running a charity takes an enormous amount of time, and between supporting survivors, growing Foundations of Hope and working towards our future goals, we simply haven’t had the time to focus on awards.

While we’re incredibly grateful for the recognition we’ve received, our priority has always been the women and children we serve.

Because the real reward is seeing survivors rebuild their lives, find their strength and realise there is hope for their future. 🌸

What happens to a child in the care of the system when they turn 18?

This is the question I cannot stop thinking about.

Nothing has changed since my last post about my son and Child Protection.

He still has nowhere to go.

I was told that Melbourne does things differently.

But here in Perth, I am being told there is nowhere for him to go.

So I asked a question that I think every parent, every social worker, every government department and every person responsible for child protection should be asking:

How is this looking after our children?

Because when my son turns 18, the system that has a legal responsibility for him can essentially say, “You are now an adult. You need to leave.”

And if he doesn't leave the premises?

The police can be called because he is trespassing.

Think about that.

A child who has been in the care of the system.

A child who has experienced trauma.

A child who may have nowhere safe to return to.

Turns 18.

And suddenly the door closes.

So I asked the case manager:

“What happens to these young people when they have nowhere to go?”

His answer will stay with me.

He told me that sometimes they return to the unsafe homes they were removed from because that can be considered safer than homelessness.

Read that again.

We remove children from unsafe environments to protect them, but when they reach adulthood, some can end up being sent back into those same environments because there is nowhere else for them to go.

So what are we actually doing?

Are we rescuing children from trauma, only to return them to the trauma?

And then he told me what can happen to some of these young people.

Drugs.

Exploitation.

Jail.

And he spoke about su***de.

Multiple times.

That word broke me.

Because su***de shouldn't be part of the conversation when we are talking about what happens to a vulnerable young person after leaving care.

It should be a wake-up call.

Turning 18 doesn't magically heal childhood trauma.

It doesn't create a home.

It doesn't create a support network.

It doesn't teach someone how to navigate adulthood.

And it certainly doesn't make them less vulnerable.

A birthday doesn't change that.

So I am asking the question publicly:

What happens to these children when the system that was supposed to protect them stops protecting them?

Where do they sleep?

Who do they call?

Who catches them when they fall?

Who makes sure they don't end up back in the environment they were removed from?

Who makes sure they don't become another statistic?

Because these aren't numbers.

They are someone's children.

They are young people who have already survived things no child should have to survive.

We cannot call it protection if the only options at the end are homelessness, returning to an unsafe home, exploitation, the justice system, or su***de.

We have to do better.

Not when they are already in crisis.

Not when they are homeless.

Not when the police are involved.

Not when we are attending another funeral.

Before it gets to that point.

Because these children deserve more than being protected until they turn 18.

They deserve somewhere safe to land.
