Last week at The Hangout... 💛

A friend popped in to visit with her daughter during the school holidays, and she brought beautiful cakes to share. 🍰

Another lady who works from a separate room had her daughter with her too, so the two girls bonded quickly (as kids do!). Before long they’d disappeared into the gym to build their very own obstacle course, and the laughter that followed was the best soundtrack to our workday.

In amongst all that, another lovely lady dropped in with a bag of 10c containers for us. Every one of them goes towards rewarding our volunteers for the incredible work they do ♻️💛

Moments like this are exactly why we love our new little space. A simple place to work from, filled with laughter, fun, visitors and cake? Hard to beat.

Come and say hi sometime. We’d love to see you at The Hangout (oh and if you happen to bring containers or cake....well, we wouldn’t say no. 😉🎂

🚨 Important Community Announcement 🚨

We regret to inform you that Doug is currently going through a bit of a rough patch.

Last week, Doug made a very involuntary visit to the vet. A visit from which he returned… somewhat lighter than when he left. 😬

He is also now the proud, and deeply unimpressed owner of a cone of shame. 🎄

For those who know Doug, you will know that this is a man (sorry, dog !) who greets every single person who walks through the doors of The Hangout with the kind of unbridled enthusiasm that could power a small city. He lives for people. He lives for cuddles. He lives for being absolutely everywhere he is not supposed to be.

And now he has to wear a hat he did not ask for and cannot see past.

The indignity of it all !!

To his credit, Doug is handling it with the grace and resilience we have come to expect from him. By which we mean he has been staring at us with those big brown eyes in a way that suggests we will be apologising for this for a very long time. 🐾

He is resting, recovering, and still very much available for pats and treats, but perhaps approach from the front so you don’t get taken out by the cone. 😂

Get well soon Doug. We are sorry mate. We really are. 💙🐶

💙 Today, we had the privilege of having lunch with Smiley.

You might not know Smiley by name, but his heart would be familiar to anyone who believes in the power of kindness.

Smiley is a free spirit and without fail, he donates his 10c containers to Blue Dot Army to support our volunteers, week in, week out. Giving what he can, because he can.

Today, we wanted to give something back.

We invited Smiley to join us for lunch in the park. Nothing fancy, just some time together, some fresh air, and the chance to say thank you to someone who deserves to hear it.

When we asked him what he’d like to eat, he didn’t hesitate.

And just like that, we were all six years old again. 😊

It was the simplest of lunches and without question, one of the most memorable meals any of us have shared in a very long time. No restaurant, no occasion, no price tag in the world could have made it more special than it was; sitting in the park with Smiley, sharing a sandwich, and being reminded that life’s most profound moments rarely cost a thing.

We also had one more surprise. We presented Smiley with his very own Blue Dot Army hat because Smiley is now an official ambassador of everything we stand for - Compassion, Kindness, Community and the belief that anyone can make a difference, no matter where they are in life.

Thank you, Smiley. For your generosity, your free spirit and for today’s lesson : one that will stay with us for a very long time.

This is what true community looks like 💛

Chris arrived in Perth recently from Broome for cancer treatment, and he was terrified about being in the city on his own.

Our volunteers and the hotel staff from Hotel Perth took that fear and wrapped their arms around him.

Chris was met at his arrival gate at Perth airport and settled into his hotel, where the team has treated him like family and made sure, he’s comfortable every step of the way.

Our volunteers have been driving him to and from his appointments, and with a quiet weekend ahead, they’ve offered to take him out for a drive and a cuppa to show him a little of Perth and ease the isolation before more appointments next week. Then it’s back to the airport next weekend for his flight home.

Changing the cancer experience for people is easy when you have an amazing team of volunteers to support them.

To our volunteers and the hotel team: thank you. You’ve turned a frightening trip into one where he knows people are looking out for him. 🙏

Last week was a wonderful reminder of how powerful a single conversation can be. 💛

We had the Director of Cathara Consulting reach out recently and was keen to learn more about Blue Dot Army and what we do after coming across our stories and saw how we change the cancer experience for people, so they don't have to face their journey alone.

That one meeting led to her and some of the team taking time out of their busy schedules to visit us at "The Hangout". They reached out and chose to get behind us, presenting us with an incredible cheque for $3,000. It was truly humbling.

For a well-established corporate organisation to hear our story, believe in it, and then walk through our doors says so much about the kind of people they are. The vibe in the room was fabulous, helped along by an incredible morning tea, personally baked by one of our wonderful volunteers, Deb. 🧁 It's amazing what good baking and a cuppa can do for conversation! To sit and chat with people who genuinely believe in our mission was inspiring, and a great reminder that every story we share has the potential to reach someone.

Thank you, Lainey and the whole Cathara Consulting team, for your generosity and your belief in our community. Because of you, more people will have someone beside them on their cancer journey.

💙 Well, we may have crashed a party yesterday and we regret absolutely nothing !

It all started with Cheryl and Jason. Over recent weeks, Blue Dot Army had the privilege of supporting this wonderful couple while Jason underwent his cancer treatment here in Perth, making sure they had transport, connection, and the reassurance that they were never doing it alone.

Their friend Jenny was so moved by the support her friends received that she decided to do something about it. She put on a Mad Hatters Tea Party as a thank you , so when we heard about it, well… we thought we'd pop in. 🎩 That was after a slight detour to the Bunbury Growers Market, and a very necessary coffee stop at the Miami Bakehouse, of course. Road trips have rules. ☕

A few of our volunteers jumped at the chance to make the trip down, gatecrash the party in the best possible way, and we got to share the story of Blue Dot Army : who we are, what we do, and why making sure people are never alone on their cancer journey is at the heart of everything we do.

As for Jenny and her guests? Well they laid on a spread that could have fed an entire army. A Blue Dot Army, in fact. 😄

The warmth in that room was something else. People who had gathered simply out of love for their friends, who listened, who asked questions, and who have now become the most wonderful advocates for the work we do.

Thank you Jenny. Thank you to every single person who was there, who welcomed us so generously, and who is now helping us spread the word about changing the cancer experience for people across Western Australia.
