Last month we had a visitor Alison who brought in her 'copper' bee bath stand. She is the Mayor of the City of Vincent. 👍

Our volunteer Bruce discussed the problem with Alison. The base of the metal stand had rusted out where the pole went through. It needed to be stable as the top would be filled with water for the bees in Alison's garden.

Bruce used a two part product called Knead-it on base to hold the rusted pole in place. This wouldn't be seen as it was underneath.

Alison proudly supports our Repair Café Perth and came to get some help. She was very pleased with her repaired bee bath.

This morning our volunteers are setting up at North Perth Town Hall, 26 View Street for our Repair Café Perth event. Doors open at 9:30am until 11:30am. Please bring your broken items that you would like to have repaired.

Last month our visitor Amy brought in a pair of jeans with some loose stitching on the back pocket.

Our textile volunteer Sharon used a double needle in her sewing machine and matching orange/yellow thread to sew the jeans' pocket.

Amy was interested in the fix and watched the whole process. Our repairs' culture aims to teach our visitors about the ways we can make our things last longer by not throwing them away when there are solutions.

Sharon did a wonderful job and the stitching looked just like the original.

Our electronics volunteer Tony was presented with a string of Christmas lights by Ric, a regular visitor to our Repair Cafe Perth events.

Tony found the faulty light and bypassed it to get the whole string functioning again. Ric has had a few Christmas light strings looked at by our volunteers and it isn't always successful.

This time he was able to roll up the functioning lights and take them home. 👍

We are grateful for the support we receive from the City of Vincent for the venue and environmental grants. Our application has once again been submitted for this year.

Our general repairs' volunteer Bruce was asked by our visitor Jessica about her secateurs. The jaws were not meeting and it wasn't working to cut her plants.

Bruce showed Jessica how the spring looked bent. With a bit of resistance the spring was removed. You can see, in the image, that it does have a slight bend. Bruce searched through his box of springs but he didn't have the exact replacement. He had noticed that when he removed the spring from the secateurs it had been incorrectly positioned.

There were two metal tabs on either arm. Bruce managed to repositioned the spring and luckily, even with the slight bend, the secateurs worked perfectly again.

Yay, another tool saved from landfill. Toss it? No way!

Our devices' volunteer, David, assisted our visitor Alvarez with his radio.

In the past month some of the ABC Radio AM stations have switched to the FM band.
For instance FM 720 and FM 585 are now tuned to FM 102.5 and FM 104.1 respectively. Also AM 810 Radio National had moved to FM 103.3. Alvarez wasn't sure how to retune his digital radio.

David helped by using a search engine browser to look online and found the exact model of Alvarez's radio then searched how to tune in using the online manual.

Maybe you have the same problem. If you any have issues with your devices please come along to our next Repair Café Perth event this Saturday 16th May at the North Perth Town Hall. Details of our event can be found in the 'events' tab of our page. Also you can visit our website on www.repaircafeperth.org.au

Alvarez was very hands-on in learning how to do the change and now has more instructions for his appliance. This is a bonus.

Our devices' volunteer Tom was brought a large TV screen by our visitor Robin. Robin explained that he'd connected it to his laptop via a cable but the screen was not showing his laptop details.

Tom connected it with his own cable to his own laptop and it showed his laptop's desktop.

The solution was that Tom used the cable through a HDMI connection to the screen.

Then Robin tried his own laptop through the same HDMI cable and it was working!👍 So it was the cable that was incorrect.

Robin was very pleased because he really wanted to use the large screen for his display. Now he knew what he needed to do.

If you have any issues with your devices that you would like help with, come along this Saturday 16th May to North Perth Town Hall, 26 View Street between 9:30 and 11:30am. Our volunteers will try to assist.

One of our visitors, Zoe, brought in a disco light. She had come in with her mother who had a textile repair that she was watching while Zoe handed her light to our 'glue, string and tape' volunteer, Lucy.

Zoe explained that a small part of the covering dome shaft had a broken plastic piece. This had been stored in a cupboard, not working, for years. And she had had it from when she was little.

Lucy carefully explained her intentions to Zoe and selected a suitable glue to use. Certain glues will not work on some plastics.

Luckily this time the piece seemed to bond. Lucy held it with patience until it set. Then she carefully taped it together and held it with a clamp. When Zoe's mother had sorted her sewing repair Lucy took off the clamp and advised leaving it to set for as long as possible before removing the tape. At least a few hours.

The disco light now had a functional cover again and we had a happy visitor.

What repair would you have stored in a cupboard waiting for an opportunity to shine again? Bring it along to our next event Saturday 16th May at North Perth Town Hall, 26 View Street from 9:30 to 11:30am.

Our devices' volunteer, David, is also very handy with other repairs and he helped the general repairs' volunteers when they had visitors waiting in a queue.

Lisa carried in her swivel office chair. Underneath the seat there was a metal base plate with a number of screws. One or two were not engaging into the seat and there was one lost screw.

David found the matching sized screws and attempted to replace the screws. But then one screw wouldn't bite. The chair was taken to Bruce, the other general repairer and he found a bigger size screw to hold the seat securely to the base.

Lisa rang the 'Fixed It' bell and was very happy to be able to safely sit in this perfectly comfortable office chair. Another successful repair which didn't go to landfill.

Time to start deciding which repairs you would like to bring along to our next event. We have a Repair Café Perth event on every third Saturday of the month. Check out our website on www.repaircafeperth.org.au/FAQ if you have any questions about what to bring. 👍

We had a very successful Repair Café Perth session on Saturday and such a variety of repairs. It was a big day for chairs. 😉

Our visitor Joanne brought in a wooden upholstered chair that belonged to a set of four made by her father. He had been a cabinet maker. This chair matched a big cupboard and table that her father had also made. She was ready to gift these chairs to charity but wouldn't offer a chair with a broken backrest.

Our general repairs volunteer, Bruce, used his wood glue and clamps to reattach the top cross piece. Now the chair was functional again.

Joanne explained that the whole set had been in storage. And this chair had somehow been damaged.
Her father had also made a matching cupboard and table. These were sold to harp maker to store his harps and display his violins.

Joanne was please to be able to pass on these chairs now with confidence.

She rang our "Fixed It' bell.

Just a reminder in case you are waiting for our Repair Café Perth event this month. Our volunteers are going to be at North Perth Town Hall tomorrow morning, Saturday 18th April from 9:30 to 11:30am. The address is 26 View Street, North Perth.

We shall have our usual range of experts to help you with your repairs: sewing and textiles; glue tape and string; general repairs; electronics; devices and more.

See the pictures below with a short description of the repair from last month.

If you can carry it in with two hands someone will take a look and help you. We can only look at electrical faults on low voltage items: things that are battery powered or have an AC adapter. Mechanical repairs are fine.
