Look for the Good
Nearly all of us have been well trained to look out for what's wrong, for what's not working, what's not right and what hasn't been done. With all those years of training we are especially good at it. It's not that you should let those things slide, but no one wants to hear how they are failing 100% of the time.
It's time to shift the focus and make the effort to balance things up. Notice when they do put the plates away, unload the dish washer, feed the cat, speak civilly to their siblings.... Comedian Erma Bombeck suggests that they might wonder what's wrong with you to start with, but go with it. In short time the whole tone of communication starts to change when teens* know they are seen AND appreciated.
