🔦SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: Meet the Orange-bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster), a small, brightly coloured parrot native to southeastern Australia. These birds breed in the remote coastal heathlands of southwestern Tasmania during summer, and migrate across Bass Strait to spend winter in coastal regions of Victoria and South Australia.

The Orange-bellied Parrot is one of the most endangered bird species in the world, classified as Critically Endangered, with fewer than 100 birds remaining in the wild! Habitat loss and degradation, predation by introduced animals such as cats and foxes, disease, and severe weather events have all contributed to the species' decline.

By the early 2010s, the wild population had fallen to fewer than 50 individuals! Significant conservation efforts have been undertaken to help recover the Orange-bellied Parrot population. These include captive breeding programs, habitat restoration, predator control, and ongoing monitoring of wild birds. Conservation organisations and government agencies work together to breed parrots in captivity and release them into the wild to increase population numbers. Researchers also track migration patterns and breeding success to better understand the species' needs. Although challenges remain, these conservation measures have helped prevent the extinction of the Orange-bellied Parrot and continue to support its recovery.

Hey, Australia's nursery industry, when are you going to stop selling w**ds? 🧐

Did you know escaped w**dy garden plants are the primary source of new w**ds in Australia?

Sold to unsuspecting shoppers at nurseries or online, w**d plants like English ivy, Amazon frogbit or pretty gazanias can quickly spread and devastate our precious places and wildlife.

It's time we stopped the sale of these plants. Like if you agree 👍

It was a windy overcast day in the reserve today. The group focussed on planting and removing bridal creeper in the Coast Banksia Woodland area of the reserve. We also removed 1 kg of rubbish.

Thank you Janet, Katherine and Tony for your all your efforts in w**d management, planting and rubbish removal.
Thank you Ann for sharing your knowledge and your written and photographic records of restoration works within the reserve. Thank you Eleanor for organising lunch.
