Swim for Fruit brought local kids together in Wiluna for another successful season of swimming, healthy food and fun at the pool 🍎🍌

Up to 20 kids joined each session, with Royal Life Saving WA providing some exciting new additions to help keep the fun going:

🏊 Noodles, kickboards and sinky toys
👕 Swim for Fruit shirts
🧢 Hats
🎨 Sidewalk chalk
🍿 Popcorn kernels to pop!

After a swim, Community Development Coordinator Bevan helped make sure kids had fresh food ready to refuel. It was great to see the kids getting involved in weekly swimming programs in Wiluna, with support from K Farmer Dutjahn Foundation and the Shire of Wiluna.

Big thanks to Healthway for supporting active and healthy kids in Wiluna this season!

Great to see the work of Remote Pool Managers like Graeme being recognised in this article 🙌

Royal Life Saving WA’s Remote Aboriginal Swimming Pool Project supports 11 pools across WA’s North West, with around 68,000 visits each year.

Remote pools make such a difference in some of WA’s most remote communities. They give kids and families a safe place to cool off, exercise and learn important water safety skills.

It was also great to see the No School, No Pool policy highlighted. It has been a really positive way to encourage kids to attend school so they can enjoy regular time at the pool.

Remote pools are such an important part of these communities. They help improve health outcomes, create meaningful local employment opportunities and contribute to reducing drowning risk in remote WA.

In Kalumburu and Balgo, two of Western Australia's most isolated towns, investing in a community swimming pool has been a boon for everyone.

After her husband Devon collapsed during his regular walk, Capel resident Nicolette and her son Shayne desperately tried to revive him in the carport of their home.

Their neighbour Rianne and her son Roald stopped to help. Roald took over CPR from Shayne while Rianne drove to the Capel Recreation Centre to retrieve a public defibrillator which she helped the boys to apply.

Shayne and Roald continued their lifesaving efforts for 29 minutes, delivering shocks and fighting to keep Devon alive through multiple cardiac arrests, until paramedics arrived and transferred him to Bunbury Regional Hospital.

Though Devon later passed away the next day, ICU doctors confirmed that the swift, skilled actions of Shayne, Roald and Rianne kept him alive long enough for his family to gather, speak with him and say goodbye, an immeasurable gift.

It is never too late to learn to swim 💙

Adults from multicultural backgrounds in Karratha and Newman recently took part in a new swimming and water safety pilot program, delivered in partnership with the Pilbara Community Legal Service.

From building confidence in the pool to learning practical water safety skills, participants had the chance to grow their skills in a friendly and supportive space 🙌

The program included mixed adult classes in Karratha and Newman, plus Women’s Only lessons in Karratha.

Because feeling safer around water matters at every age! 🏊‍♀️

A big thank you to Pilbara Community Legal Service Inc for supporting these lessons.

Don’t let winter freeze your child’s swimming progress ❄️

Keeping up regular swimming lessons through the colder months helps kids stay active and maintain confidence in the water. A little prep makes winter lessons much easier. Try these simple tips:

1️⃣ Arrive already dressed to swim 🥽
Skip the chilly changerooms before lessons and remember to pack warm, dry clothes for after (think cosy tracksuits, socks and beanies!)

2️⃣ Bring a thermos of something warm 🍵
A warm drink like hot chocolate, herbal tea or soup is perfect to warm up post-swim.

3️⃣ Use a hooded towel or robe 🥼
Help your child stay cosy between the pool and changeroom with a snug towel or swim robe.

4️⃣ Keep swimming year-round 🏊
Consistent swimming builds resilience and stops skills from regressing during winter.

5️⃣ Make it something to look forward to 🎉
Add a small reward, invite a friend or make lessons a fun part of your weekly family routine.

Find an Endorsed Swim School near you and jump into lessons this winter! 👉 https://bit.ly/3PnIMKq

We’re on board with this message 🫡 When you go boating, the most important thing you can wear is a properly fitted lifejacket!

A great reminder from Transport WA to check your lifejacket, EPIRB and safety grab bag before your next trip. It could make all the difference. Bonus points if your safety briefing comes in a sea shanty 🎶
